Internet Safety Tips

Family Jr. is a virtual place where both parents and children are encouraged to surf together.

We’ve made every effort to ensure that Family Jr. is a safe and secure site for both you and your child. As you may know, children surfing the web presents safety concerns.

As a responsible parent/guardian, please take the time to educate your child about Internet safety. It begins by taking an active role in knowing what sites your child visits and what activities they like to engage in online.

Parents should also be aware that there are software programs available that monitor internet usage and block certain sites.

Web Wisdom

1. Ensure that NO personal information (such as names, addresses, phone numbers, etc) is disclosed.

2. Your child should never meet anyone they’ve communicated with online unless you are present.

3. Your child should never buy something online or download anything without first obtaining your permission.

4. Make sure your child understands that anything they post or share online could become public.

5. Encourage your child to take a break from devices once in a while. Be sure to set a good example!

Tips for monitoring internet consumption

1. Always make sure you know when your child is online. Place computers in busy family areas like the kitchen.

2. Check out any new site or app before letting your little one use it until you’re satisfied there won’t be any surprises.

3. Create a library of bookmarks for your child’s favourite trusted websites that can be accessed with a single click. To avoid your child moving to another page by accident, you can usually hide the Address Bar and the Search field by going fullscreen (F11 key).

4. When your child is old enough to explore the internet on their own, it’s a good idea to enable “safe search” on the popular search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo.

5. Make sure they let you know immediately should they ever encounter any material that makes them feel uncomfortable. Assure them that it is not their fault if they have stumbled across something inappropriate.
