CCIMUN 2025 is committed to upholding the principles of equity and inclusivity in order to ensure the most inclusive + enriching experience for organizers, faculty and delegates. We must use MUN as a way to teach leadership through challenge and competition.
CCIMUN is proud to have offered this challenge to Southern Ontario students for over 20 years. To afford delegates the best experience possible, CCIMUN 2025 seeks to focus on the values of collaboration and respect in the diverse community that will be at the Conference, because Cedarbrae CI itself is situated in such a diverse community; it is our lived reality and aspiration. In keeping these ideas at the forefront of our actions, CCIMUN will enhance the skills that students will need to make change within their communities.
The CCIMUN 2025 equity policy details guidelines for appropriate and respectful behaviour during the Conference.
MUN debate is delivered through role play, and role play taken too far can be potentially hurtful.
Firstly, this policy seeks to protect and advance the rights of those who participate through creating a community of compassion and mutual respect.
Secondly, it strives to respect the lived experiences of those who participated in historical events and to honor and advance the rights of marginalized groups in both past and present terms.
CCIMUN aims to make Model UN a welcoming place for everyone, regardless of their background. Delegates are encouraged to engage with their topics substantively by exploring solutions that target affected communities, while acknowledging and minimizing the potential harms of their discussions. When assuming the role of a character or country, we ask that you not trivialize the lived experiences or identity of that entity and the groups they interact with, especially if you do not share those experiences and identities.
While you are encouraged to “get into character” as much as possible, you must also be cognizant of the fact that you are playing this character within the context of a different reality, namely that of the SSUNS 2025 Conference. This means that certain actions and language that you might deem would have been commonplace in the world in which your country or character existed, in no way does this necessarily translate into reality.
CCIMUN has a zero-tolerance policy for any forms of bullying and harassment, including but not limited to discrimination on the basis of religion, race, gender, age, nationality, ability, and sexual orientation. The guidelines provided below should not be understood as exhaustive, though give a clear indication of actions that will not be permitted:
● Any directive that aims to impose neo-colonialist or imperialist action on any country, group, or person.
● Any speech, directive, or crisis arc that seeks to incite violence (overt or veiled) causing excessive suffering of noncombatants within any country or to any group of peoples or persons.
● Homophobic or transphobic language, or any other form of speech or written work (overt or veiled) that harms members of the LGBTQ+ community.
● Racist language, or any other form of speech or written work (overt or veiled) that harms members of racialized communities. This includes, but is not limited to, Islamophobia, anti-semitism, and xenophobia.
● Sexist or misogynistic language, or any other form of speech or written work (overt or veiled) that harms women, non-binary or gender non-conforming individuals.
● Any speech, directive, or crisis arc that proliferates stereotypes or cultural appropriation of any country or group of peoples or persons.
● Any speech, directive, or crisis arc (overt or veiled) that trivializes or makes light of any suffering of persons or atrocities committed against them, whether past or current. This includes, but is not limited to, genocide, war, and dictatorship.
● Any speech or action in committee (overt or veiled) that discriminates or in any other way removes the autonomy and agency of any delegate on the basis of gender, race, ethnicity, disability, sexuality, etc.
● Any speech or action (overt or veiled) in committee that fails to accommodate any accessibility needs that a delegate or staff member has. This includes, but is not limited to, intentionally writing written works in a font that is difficult to read, purposefully trying to cause detriment to someone’s mental health, or using mocking language.
The actions above are not a complete and exhaustive list of all prohibited behaviours. When in doubt ask your chairs by email ahead of the conference and on the day of the conference. Even then, they will have to get clearance from Mr. Woo, CCIMUN Faculty Advisor.
