The QMC School of Creative Arts is housed in the Allen Building, a purpose-built creative space. Art, Craft and Design lessons take place across a series of rooms on the ground floor.
Students have access to a variety of studio spaces which include facilities for drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles and ceramics. We have a large printing press for etching and collagraph as well as extensive screen printing facilities. The textiles studio is equipped with a class set of sewing machines, a hot press and a loom for large scale weaving. The ceramics studio houses two wheels for throwing pots and two kilns which allow students to explore a variety of glazing and firing techniques.
Students can also access the computer suite which is fully equipped with the latest Adobe package (including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign). In addition to this, as a part of the School of Creative Arts, we are able to access equipment traditionally aimed at other art disciplines such as a Risograph printer (usually only offered at university level) and moving image software. We believe that all of these resources give our students the best opportunity to succeed in the kind of work they want to produce.
The ground floor of the Allen Building also houses our exhibition space, and all of our students have the opportunity to have work shown there as part of a revolving exhibition program. In addition, student work is showcased through our popular departmental Instagram page. These opportunities for student work to be seen are vital tools for their development and for seeing their work in a professional context, and part of the reason we enjoy so much success with our students.
