William G. Morgan invented volleyball in 1895 at Holyoke, Massachusetts. He was the director of physical education at the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA).
The sport, volleyball was created for businessmen as well as elders who thought basketball was too violent. William based volleyball off of tennis, making the rules similar. It wasn't until 1916, the rules were advised. In the 1900s the sport attracted many people including the armed forces and women.
