Dear Hiring Manager,
I am writing to express my interest in the ACOR Graduate Program. I believe I would be a suitable candidate for this position, as I am currently studying Civil Engineering (Honors) at Monash University and have completed a year as an Undergraduate Civil Engineer for Acciona Australia, working on the Glen Huntly Level Crossing Removal Project. I have in-depth knowledge about structural and civil infrastructure at the construction level, and the steps taken to resolve problems with the design on site.
I would love to experience working as a civil engineer at a design firm, as I think the theory I’ve learned in the classroom and the experience I have gained on the construction site could be greatly beneficial when consulting infrastructure projects.
During my year as a full-time undergraduate engineer, I often worked around the clock as the project required. Thus, I was able to experience all the different parts of the project including planning and management of construction activities, procurement and cost-tracking. While the procurement of materials and cost-tracking for the project are not heavily technical, they allowed me to gauge an excellent understanding of the costs associated with construction, which can help provide cost-effective solutions.
In addition, I am an active member of the Monash University Association of Civil Engineering Students and was a member of the executive committee in 2022, where I helped plan and run networking events and other student programs. My experience at and outside of the University has provided me with the ability to work well in a team environment to ensure tasks are completed promptly.
I appreciate your time to review my application and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Vindinu De Silva

Job Application Criteria
Recent, relevant engineering qualifications
As this is a civil engineering position, the position requires applicants to hold a degree in Civil Engineering before the start of the program. I meet this criteria as I am studying civil engineering and my expected year of graduation is the end of 2024.
Excellent communication skills
Before my work as an undergraduate site engineer, I worked at a call centre for the NDIS. In this job, I worked as a customer service representative, which allowed me to develop my communication skills. I would develop clear communication skills as the clients I would deal with were sometimes highly emotional, and providing clear communication was vital to prevent them from becoming abusive.
My experience as an undergraduate site engineer allowed me to further develop my communication skills. I needed these skills as I was required to present and effectively explain the planned work to the labourers completing the work. Also through communications with project stakeholders, I improved upon my presentation and public speaking skills. From my experiences especially as a customer service representative I can meet this job criteria.
An interest in engineering design and project management
My decision to specialise in civil engineering came from my love for structural engineering. I enjoyed the design units I completed at university, especially the ones where I had to design my office building. I got enjoyment playing around with design software like Space gass and Auto cad to figure out where I should place certain structural elements to meet all the design criteria. Furthermore, during the year I spent working at Acciona on the Glen Huntly Level Crossing removal project, I was inspired by how beautiful the new station was and impressed with how it complemented the wider community. Seeing the new station get constructed, I realised I would one day like to design a similar building, which ultimately led me to desire a career in design.
During my time working at Acciona, I enjoyed the planning and project management aspects of construction. I found myself highly engaged while trying to come up with solutions for issues that occurred around the staging of activities as well as the logistics of construction. Furthermore, I found myself highly invested in finding ways to make construction more productive and efficient. I believe my desire to solve problems shows my passion for project management and engineering design at AORC.
High level of organisational skills
I believe my high level of organisational skills can be highlighted through my work experience. To be successful in my role at Acciona, I had to have excellent time management skills, decision-making, planning and scheduling skills. During the internship, I would plan out the activities I would need to complete for the week and look ahead to upcoming deadlines for the month. I planned out my task by importance and due date, ensuring I never missed any deadlines and was able to ensure enough time was allocated to the task to ensure the submission was of quality. Furthermore, I would balance my time in the office and on the construction site effectively to ensure I was always being productive to avoid having to stay late. I believe the way I conducted myself at my internships highlights my high level of organisational skills.
Due to the nature of the projects in which we work, we are only able to consider applications from candidates with Australian Citizenship who are eligible for baseline security clearance.
As this job criteria is only a citizenship check I would be able to meet this criteria as I am an Australian Citizen.
