Interview Q & A
What is you name?
Ashley Lindsey and i'm a registered dental hygienist at The Pic Place.
How long did it take you to become a dental hygienist?
The prerequisites are about two years and the actual dental program was another two full years but its five semesters so you do the summer semester as well.
Do you like your job?
i'm love my job i feel like i'm able to give care to people that either wouldn't be able to access care and I can educate them on there oral health that can have a impact on there entire body health.
How do you deal with stress in your job?
I have a hour ride home every day I live in ceterage so I get to decompress before I get home everyday. Theres a moderate amount of stress working in a community health center but its not anything that I would say get excessively stressed over where I cant let I go.
What qualities do you have that make you successful in your job?
I feel like i'm a fairly compassionate person so I can be very understanding to patients that have special health care needs or have more dental needs than in other dental needs I would say thats my biggest quality.
What do you least like about your job?
I would say the pain like body pain, they stress ergonomics a lot during hygiene school so pay attention to those but i think over time you kind of get lax on those body mechanics and crate a lot of body pain if you don't take care of yourself.
What made you choose this career?
Im not like your typical Hygienist that knew what they wanted to do from a young age. When i graduated from high school i was a accounting major and i also had a heart condition and I ended up having surgery at nineteen, while i was in the hospital the doctor told me that she felt like i was made for the medical field and it really made me think of it, and at that time in my life i was living in Rangely so i wet ti the college up there and talked to the about health care programs that they had. Dental hygiene was the one that they had in Rangely and the other option would be me going to Craig and doing the nursing program. So i did my prerequisites and I told myself that I would apply for dental hygiene but if i didn't get in i would apply for nursing, i was also working as a CNA at that point, but i got into the program and i never looked back.
What do you think are the keys to being successful?
Enjoying your job, not going into a job specifically because of pay but actually enjoying your job. I think thats the biggest part of being successful in your career you need to enjoy it to stay with it.
