The Colorado Department of Education defines "Professional" using the following descriptors:
time & work management
career literacy
grit and resilience
work ethic; dependable and reliable
Professionalism means representing myself with maturity, compassion, responsibility , and respect. It also means maintaining patient confidentiality , communicating clearly and effectively , and carrying myself in a way that builds trust with patients and staff.
As a student-athlete, over the years I have developed strong discipline, teamwork, and time-management skills by balancing school, practices, and competitions. Sports taught me how to stay focused under pressure, communicate clearly with teammates, and show up consistently — all qualities that have improved my professionalism in my internship.
This semseter my intership was in the radiology department at Montrose Regional Health. This opportunity helped me understand how much I love patient care. My goal is to become a Pediatric Nurse Practioner so i can provide paitents with compassionate care and help young children and their families feel safe and understood. To accopmplish my dream career i plan on attending Grand Canyon University in Arizona to get my BSN and RN , then earn my masters degree.

Q. 1 ) Can you introduce yourself and share your current job title?
ans 1) My name is Natalie Mills, and I am a radiologic technologist or an x ray tech
Q. 2 ) How long have you been working in this field?
ans 2) I got a job working here in December of last year. So about a year. However, I've only been an official tech and passed my board since May.
Q. 3 ) What inspired you to go into the medical field initially?
ans 3) I’ve always wanted to help people and do something meaningful that makes me feel good at the end of the day. I felt that working in the medical field would allow me to do that.
Q. 4 ) What does a typical day look like for you?
ans 4) I start my day by getting ready and commuting about 45 minutes since I don’t live in town. When I arrive, I prepare for the day by reviewing the schedule and determining which X-rays need to be completed and where extra help may be needed. Some days involve assisting in the operating room, while others focus on diagnostic imaging in the department. The workload varies ,some days are busy, and others are slower but I definitely prefer the busy days.
Q. 5 ) What do you enjoy most about working here?
ans 5) One of my favorite aspects of this job is the team I work with. During my clinical rotations, I experienced environments with a lot of workplace drama, so I truly appreciate the positive, supportive atmosphere here. Everyone works well together, and I always know I can ask for help if I’m struggling with a patient or procedure.
Q. 6 ) What made you specifically choose radiology as your specialty?
ans 6) I originally wanted to become a nurse and worked as a CNA in nursing homes and hospitals. However, I realized nursing wasn’t the right fit for me due to the amount of charting and routine tasks. Once I began learning about radiology, how X-rays are produced, and the variety of procedures involved.I found it much more interesting and engaging. Radiology allows me to see and do things that I find exciting, and I’m very glad I chose this path.
Q. 7 ) Were there any major challenges you faced on your journey, and how did you overcome them?
ans 7) Yes, there were several challenges. While I was in X-ray school and completing clinicals, my father passed away. I took time off to grieve and process everything. Although academics were challenging, that personal loss was the hardest part. I’m grateful that I stayed focused and continued with my education, because it ultimately led me to where I am today.
Q. 8 ) Is there anything you wish you had known before entering this field?
ans 8 ) I wish I had known how much knowledge and responsibility the job truly requires. Many people assume radiology is easy, but it can be very complex. I was also surprised to learn that X-ray technologists assist in surgery. Using specialized equipment like the C-arm in a sterile environment was intimidating at first, but I’ve come to really enjoy it. Being involved in surgical procedures allows us to help patients in ways beyond traditional imaging.
Q.9 ) How is imaging in surgery different from routine X-rays?
ans 9) In surgery, patients are often unconscious, which means it’s our responsibility to advocate for them. We must ensure sterile technique is maintained and speak up if we notice anything that could compromise patient safety. We also use different equipment, such as a C-arm, which is a large, mobile X-ray unit that allows for imaging at multiple angles. Working around sterile fields with this equipment can be challenging, but it’s very rewarding.
Q. 10 ) What skills or qualities do you think are most important for success in radiology (or your specific medical role)?
ans 10 ) Staying positive is extremely important, especially when working with patients who are experiencing serious injuries or health crises. Being a strong team player and knowing when to seek emotional support or counseling are also crucial. Supporting coworkers and maintaining a healthy mindset helps create a better work environment for everyone.
Q. 11 ) What advice would you give to a student like me who wants to go into pediatrics, radiology, or the medical field in general?
ans 11 ) Don’t get discouraged. School and clinical training can be exhausting, especially when you’re putting in long hours without pay. However, those experiences are incredibly valuable. Don’t let others scare you with worst-case scenarios. There are so many rewarding moments that outweigh the difficult ones. If your goal is to help people, this field can be incredibly fulfilling.
