WBL INTERNSHIP: NURSING AT MONTROSE REGIONAL HEALTH, SAME DAY SURGERY
The Colorado Department of Education defines "Professional" using the following descriptors:
time & work management
career literacy
grit and resilience
work ethic; dependable and reliable
In my opinion, professionalism is a measure of character within the work place. It's more than how one talks or dresses; it's a reflection of how one represents themselves to their coworkers and their employer to the public. Professionalism includes a focused and selfless dedication to your work, effective management of your time, and polite, prompt, communication with patients and coworkers. A professional should remain calm under pressure, handle delicate situations with compassion, and adapt to face any situation with success in mind.
Although I'm currently a junior in high school I aspire to one day join the world of medical professionals. I will attend a four-year college and earn a degree, hopefully in biochemistry. As of now I'm unsure of where I will receive my secondary education or the exact path I'll take to enter the medical community post-undergrad. Currently, although my experiences with nursing have all been wonderful, I believe I'll pursue medical school and the eventual title of doctor, working in a specialty area of a surgical department.
How To Be Successful..
Build Relationships- I wanted to build genuine connections not only with my coworkers but also our patients! Oftentimes we see patients for a short period of time in which they are typically nervous and/or in pain, making simple conversation can help a surgical experience to feel less scary!
Ask Questions- The objective of this internship was to learn as much as possible, and the only way to do that is through asking in depth questions about relevant situations or content. Mentors want to be asked questions and they like to answer them; asking will show your mentors you are engaged and excited to learn!
Have Confidence!- Remember that you are there for a reason, being confident in yourself will help others to have confidence in you as well. Smile and have fun, i promise your time'll fly by. You got this!!
empathy
professionalism
