The Colorado Department of Education defines "Professional" using the following descriptors:
time & work management
career literacy
grit and resilience
work ethic; dependable and reliable
Professionalism to me is more than career literacy, grit, and resilience. It is having integrity in all that you do and every piece of work you produce. To me professionalism is the ability to learn and use soft skills to be the best employee or boss you can be. Soft skills such as communication, dependability, and adaptability align with my idea of professionalism.
I have been working since I turned 14 years old, as a referee and scorekeeper for the Rec Center, a referee for club soccer through the state, a babysitter, a dog-sitter, and a customer service/food service employee at Taco Bell and Crumbl Cookies. I got my CNA license in 2021, and plan to work as a CNA this summer before I leave for college in the fall of 2023.
I have wanted to be a nurse since I was a little girl and cared for my mom after she was in a car accident. I plan to become a hardworking and prosperous nurse (RN) and graduate with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Arizona.
Q: What is one piece of advice you would give to someone interested in the radiology field?
A: One piece I would give to someone interested in this career field is that I would highly recommend for people to do their research and shadow, observe, and see if its what they really want to do with their life, cause it can be a very demanding field at times.
Q: What classes did you take in high school that you feel helped you the most in radiology?
A: I’d say the one class that helped me out the most was biology. Learning body systems and how they work.
Q: What skills are important for someone looking to work in radiology to have?
A: Skills that are important to have a successful career and be a good radiologist is paying attention to detail, customer care, being a professional and taking care of your patient and patience, I’d say lots of patience because some people can be difficult and its important to have patience for everybody and treat everybody as if it was your mom, your grandma, your dad. It’s how you want to be treated, basically that's how you should be treating other people.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I like most about my job is the technical aspect of it, that I get to interact with my patients and I am able to do the best service I can to every individual patient.
Asking Questions- learn as much as possible by asking questions about things I don't yet know
Initiation- be helpful to the radiology team, not just another body on the floor
Networking- develop professional relationships that continue to grow after my internship is over
Dependability- always showing up when I say I will, dressed appropriately and show up on time
Respect- show everyone respect, including the employees and the patients
Communication- develop more concise communication skills, learn how they communicate through abbreviations
Team Work- team work is a highly valued soft skill, watching the radiology employees work as a team showed me how it can look in the workplace
