The Colorado Department of Education defines "Professional" using the following descriptors:
-Time and Work Management
-Career literacy
-Grit and Resilience
-Work ethic; dependable and reliable
Professionalism is the word we hear everyday when it comes to the world of working. Its an idea that we strive for, a concept we preach, a theory of how we can succeed in a world where nothing is guaranteed. But what does it mean to me? You're probably expecting a general answer, or a standard textbook one ( am talking about professionalism, right?) but definition doesn't resonate with everyone. Professionalism is being emotionally secure in the workplace, mentally mature, and empathetic towards others within your environment.
I can put it in simple terms, I want to be an occupational therapist. When my brother was born, he had a life threatening heart condition which meant he had to go in for surgeries at a young age, prohibiting his growth. After seeing how amazing the occupational therapists were with him and how much he improved under them, I decided that that was going to be what I wanted to do in order to help more kids like him. I want to attend University of Arkansas and major in psychology before studying occupational, then hopefully moving to a beachside town and work in the industry.
While i work at Mountain View Therapy, i also am employed at Piel Morena as a cashier and store runner on Saturdays. I have worked as a Climbing intern for Nature connection and a camp counselor at outer range school., which has given me valuable experience in managing and working with children as well as parents. I am also currently working at Grace Community Church as a babysitter. These odds and ends jobs have provided me with the ability to adapt quickly to any situation as well as preform well without constant vigilance from bosses, as usually i was left to myself to figure out what i needed to without clear directions. I have experience with working long hours and handling unpleasant situations, as well as gained the ability to self motivate and handle stressful situations.
I wanted to be motivated to do or achieve something because of my own enthusiasm or interest as well as self-motivated on doing assignments and tasks assigned to me. I wanted to pay particular attention to what needed to be accomplished in the moment and stay engaged on the tasks that the occupational therapists were preforming. I wanted to extract as much as possible from the experience.and wanted to give my upmost attention to whatever was happening around me which is something i struggle with. This is especially important for workplace conduct as it shows your employer that you are engaged in the actions of the company as well as a person who is driven to preform better which is a strength we all wants to showcase.
The dictionary describes assertiveness as having or showing a confident and forceful personality. While i strive to be more confident, to me its more about voicing my opinion when i can add to the situation as well as contributing and sharing my thoughts and ideas towards a certain goal. I wanted to be educated enough to add to the conversation as well as contribute to the workplace environment instead of just being a bump on a log. I wanted to insert myself into situations (when appropriate) and voice my questions in order to gain more knowledge without being embarrassed or feeling like a nuisance . This also signals to your boss that you are learning ,listening, and are invested enough to voice your comments and shows that you are in tune with the workplace environment.
I wanted to have the ability to use one's time effectively or productively, especially at work. I struggle with time management and that leads me to be behind on schoolwork and home lifestyle. With this intership, i wanted to practice like i was in real life, and pretended like i would risk getting fired. i adapted by introducing stratagies that would help me get to the internship on time as well as turning things in on time. I did struggle with this but i pulled through and turned my stuff in on time mostly, and arrived on time to my internship every day and on time. I let my supervisior know if i wasn't going to be there and we practiced good communication skills. This shows your boss that you care about the postion and being on time is a skill you will use for the rest of your life.
