WBL Internship: Nursing At Montrose Regional Health
The Colorado Department of Education defines "Professional" using the following descriptors:
time & work management
career literacy
grit and resilience
work ethic; dependable and reliable
Professionalism consists of being responsible and exceeding to do your best at your job. Aside from showing up and completing your tasks, having a positive attitude and giving other others confidentiality also makes up what professionalism is.
Wanting to help others has always came natural to me and a job in the medical field is what sticks out to me. I plan on becoming a compassionate and reliable neonatal nurse or pediatrician nurse who aims to prioritize patient needs and use my knowledge, as well as health care resources, to provide the best care I can. To accomplish this goal, I plan on attending CMU, upon graduation, to major in nursing.
After school and part-time during the summer, I work as a busser serving customers and meeting staff needs at a local restaurant, called Ted Nelson's SteakHouse. I have learned many customer service skills along with the ability to multi-task, and work under pressure.
Throughout HighSchool I have decided to take the Health Sciences career pathway. By doing so, I have taken the PLTW course that consists of the following classes:
Principles of Biomedical Science
Human Body Systems
Medical Interventions
Medical Innovations
Q: What is your name?
A: My name is Monserrat Rosas, but I go by Monse.
Q: Where did you work?
A: Currently I am working at a dermatology office, I've worked as a CNA at River Valley, and as a Medical Assistant at the Pediatrics, here in Montrose.
Q: What would you do?
A: At the Pediatrics I would take vital intakes, do vaccinations, call labs and make sure they were being done. And currently I take patients back at the dermatology office for whatever reason they're being seen for. And as a CNA at River Valley I would do referrals and vitals as well.
Q: What did you like the most about that job?
A: With all my jobs I've liked the patient interaction, just because it makes them a bit happier to speak to somebody or be able to comfort them in any situation they're feeling, like sad or like they need help in.
Q: Why did you choose this career?
A: I chose it because I feel like there's a need for medical assistants and I just like helping patients out and people out and making sure that they're comfortable and getting what they need.
Q: What's more important, making a lot of money or doing something you enjoy?
A: Doing something I enjoy because if I'm making money somewhere else and not enjoying what I do, I'm not going to find joy in it, and I'm not going to stay there forever. So doing something I enjoy matters way more than the money portion.
Q: What advice would you give someone going into this medical field?
A: To just keep going, and go as far as you can and as far as you want. Theres not really an endpoint, just get to the point you want to get. So keep going, and go to school right after HighSchool.
Critical Thinking: brainstorm potential solutions to a problem and then logically eliminate items to arrive at the best possible solution.
Work Ethic: not procrastinate and complete my work on a timely manner.
Career Management: willing to take calculated risks, not be afraid to go outside my comfort zone by volunteering to work on projects that challenge me.
