WBL Internship: Med Surg at Montrose Regional Hospital
The Colorado Department of Education defines "Professional" using the following descriptors:
time & work management
career literacy
grit and resilience
work ethic; dependable and reliable
My Personal Definition:
I think the biggest thing that comes to mind when I think about the word professionalism is being able to get along with your coworkers and also being able to maintain a healthy work life. Such as being able to make friends with your coworkers and hang out with them outside of work, but also being able to maintain a proffesional work enviroment, like knowing when to talk about certain topics at work.
My Future Plan & Career Statement
Helping others has always been a passion of mine. That is why in the future I hope I am a skilled and reliable surgeon. As of now, I am not sure what I want to specialize in, though I have been thinking about being a pediatric surgeon. To accomplish this I hope to be graduating at UCLA, majoring in biology.
Goals I Set For Myself
Communication: One major goal I wanted to accomplish during my internship at the hospital was being able to communicate comfortably with the staff and even with the patients. I think that with my experience here at the hospital it has definitely improved as with the help of communication I was able to build strong connections with the staff at the hospital. I believe, especially in the medical field, it is important to have good communication skills.
Seeing Procedures: With the help of the CNAs, I was able to see some procedures done, such as a chest tube insertion and a catheter being put in a patient. This was a goal I wanted to focus on because even though it wasn't a surgical operation, I think that even seeing these small procedures allowed me to see that I am not easily grossed out by any type of bodily fluids.
Going Out of my Comfort Zone: I think my overall experience at the hospital has pushed me to go out of my comfort zone as everything there was a new enviroment for me. Also by going out of my comfort zone, I was able to learn a bunch of new information and skills that I didn't know before.
