COS Internship
Firefighter at the Montrose Fire Protection District
The Colorado Department of Education defines "Professional" using the following descriptors:
time & work management
career literacy
grit and resilience
work ethic; dependable and reliable
My personal definition: Professionalism in my opinion means respect, hard work, and knowledge. In a professional setting, all three of these aspects come into play. You have to be open minded and respect others and their ideas. You have to earn the respect of others as well, in order to do that, you have to work hard and accomplish things in your career. Most importantly though, you have to care about what you are doing, if you go to work every day and do the bare minimum, put your work on other people, nobody will respect you, and that's simply not professional.
In my future I plan to obtain my EMT certification, and get my fire 1 certification in order to be qualified to work at a department. After that, I am hoping to further my knowledge in EMS, eventually getting my paramedic certification.
Before I started my internship, I set a few goals for the semester. My number one goal was to see whether or not I would enjoy this career, and pretty early on I found out that I really liked going to the station everyday, getting to know the people there, and learning about what really happens on a day to day basis. Another goal of mine was to learn a lot of useful information so that I could apply my experience in the future, I think that I did well with this one as well. I got to see and participate in a variety of trainings, rope rescue, extrication, CPR, and BLS, just to name a few. I also got to go in depth through the fire engine and the ambulance, I got to see what tools are available, as well as how and what they are used for. I also got to go out on a lot of emergency calls, I got to see some car accidents, some lift assists, some medical emergencies, and through all of those, I got to see what we do and how it's all done.
As of now, I work part time after school at Sonic Drive In, I feel like this experience is helping me prepare for the different kinds of people I may meet while in a firefighter/EMT career. I also have learned a lot of different ways to work in a team setting from this job, as well as my summer job at Sleeping Indian Ranch. At the ranch, almost everything is a group effort, even if you are doing something alone, your work helps the teams effort. These soft skills relate closely with firefighting for a few reasons, the most important being the listening aspect of group work. You have to be open to others idea's and opinions during every point in this career.
