WBL Internship: Physical Therapy at Mountain View Therapy
The Colorado Department of Education defines
"Professional" using the following descriptors:
time & work management
career literacy
grit and resilience
work ethic; dependable and reliable
My Personal Definition of Professionalism:
I think that being professional is all about your attitude and the quality of your work. Yes, everything in the CDE definition is important but you also have to take into account factors like manners and having a postive, respectful personality not being uptight and rigid but knowing the rules and expectations but also being easy going. Also, doing your work with quality and precision is part of being professional so that you can perform your best everyday at work.
Resume
Career Statement And Future Plans
In the next few years of my life after Highschool I plan on going to college to pursue Physical Therapy. Its a very long hard but also exciting journey through lots of school but I first need to apply for as many colleges as I can. My plan is to go to a good college that will hopefully give me a good scholarship. I have to work on my undergrad for four years before I actually go to PT school but I just need to put in lots of hard work like I have done in everything else and I'm confident I'll be able to do it. Ive heard from all of the Physical Therapists i have talked to that PT school is very fun and engaging and that they have never enjoyed school more. PT school consists of hands on learning in class such as practicing finding muscles on your classmates and learning how to use different tools. But after the first year you get to spend alot of time observing patients and other therapists. Then you get to do clinical rotations where you actually get to work with patients and I've watched people during clinical rotations that take over appointments and do the whole thing themselves while the actual PT just watches so i'm definitely looking forward to PT school I know it will be hard but I think It will be super fun.
Current Experience
I am currently enrolled in Biomedical classes at Montrose High School that have given me a deeper understand of medical careers and basic medical concepts so I have a good idea of what is going on in a clinical setting and I have a solid foundation in the things I will need to learn in Physical Therapy School.
Goals I Set For Myself
The main goal I wanted to achieve at my internship was to work on my social skills and my ability to talk to a large variety of people and especially work being able to talk to people that I don't know. Throughout my time at Mountain View Therapy I had to work on my communication skills a ton so I would say I definitely accomplished my goal. I even went above and beyond and had to practice my communication skills in Spanish as well as english which really helped with my Spanish fluency and allowed me to talk and communicate with even more people than I would be able to If I only spoke english.
Another goal I developed when I first started going to my site was to experience as many different types of physical therapy as possible. When I told my supervisors this they helped my reach my goal by reaching out to the other branches of Mountain View Therapy and we arranged it so that I was able to experience three other types of PT, I got to watch wound care, pediatric PT, and in-patient PT It was really cool for me to see these things so I am really happy that I got to accomplish this goal.
