The Colorado Department of Education defines "Professional" using the following descriptors:
time & work management
career literacy
grit and resilience
work ethic; dependable and reliable
My Personal Definition: Being professional consists of a lot of qualities such as being on time, dressing properly, using manners, and knowing what you are doing. However, these qualities are just a small part of being a professional. You also have to have a clear goal in mind as well as have the motivation to get there. A lot of people in today's society say they want something but do nothing to achieve it. I believe this is one of the key parts of getting to the professional level.
I strive to be an advanced freelance designer who aims towards prioritizing to all client needs as well as as contributing to the design community and create a good and artistic name for myself. I plan to achieve this by getting as much experience as I can.
Outside of projects through school, I do some freelance jobs as well as building my online presence and doing my own free work. I have a part time job at Paghre's Italian Restaurant and do my design work on the side at the moment. i hope to soon be making more money and getting more experience in the design field when I graduate.
Communication: Something that I really wanted and need to work on was my communication. I am a pretty quiet and introverted person so being in a new place helped me to get out of my comfort zone and get some practice talking and collaborating with people.
Efficiency/Workflow: Although I'm proficient in most of the design software, I still had a lot to improve in. Being in a more fast paced environment helped me to be more efficient and be able to get more done in a shorter amount of time.
Creativeness: I had to think outside of the box and figure out a lot on my own because of how unfamiliar I was with the whole process and because of that, it helped me train my brain to be more creative and come up with my own original ideas.
I am a very introverted person so I don't usually go out of my way to make conversation with strangers. I got a lot better at talking to people and making connections and pushing myself to get out of my comfort zone in the last few months, both at my internship and outside.
What is your favorite part about this job?
Some jobs we get are pretty boring just because they're more for advertising but we will sometimes get a job that has a really cool graphic and the customer lets you have your own spin on it and it really comes down to having fun with it.
What's more important: making money or doing something that you like?
I think having a better job is more important because your mental health will be a lot better and you will be more happy overall rather than drudging through your days.
Did you go to college?
I didn't want to go to college because I didn't want to spend money on electives and classes I wouldn't use but in a lot of cases for job applications, people skip over your degrees and look more at how much experience and skill you have.
How did you get this job?
I would often go in and ask if they're hiring, I probably asked a good three or four times before I got the job. The lead designer at Megapixel (former name of Go Big Banners) saw me in multiple times and told me to keep coming in because they were actually hiring.
What do you like most about this job?
I like how there's a smaller team and it's easier to communicate and because of that we're able to have a better relationship.
How did you choose the career you're currently in?
When I was young I was pretty interested into the arts and going into high school I learned about the Adobe softwares and I liked using them and wanted to pursue that.
What are some things you learned at this job?
At my first job, my manager and coworker taught me a lot more about Illustrator and Photoshop and helped me advance my skills a lot.
Did you ever work part time as a teenager?
had two jobs in my senior year. One was at a food place and the other was at City Market. If you've worked retail you learn to be a lot kinder to people like putting your cart away right and putting things back in the right spot.
Are you involved in any community service?
I like to volunteer at the animal shelter when I get the chance. It's really chill and calm and I also like animals.
What's one piece of career advice that what help me?
Make sure you know how to use the software and hard skills and always keep learning about them because it will make you much more efficient and helps you do the best job you can.
