WBL Internship: Special education at Centennial Middle School
The Colorado Department of Education defines "Professional" using the following descriptions:
time and work management
career literacy
grit and resilience
work ethic: dependable and reliable
My Personal Definition:
In my opinion, professionalism is showing up ready to work, putting personal distractions aside, and focusing on the task at hand. It’s about delivering quality results efficiently, managing time and resources well. Being professional also involves clear communication, respect for others, and accountability. Ultimately, it’s about maintaining a strong work ethic and creating an environment of trust and excellence.

Goals Iv'e set for myself:
Communication skills: I wanted to be better at communicating with my colleuges and supervisors. Being able to talk to your supervisors about your feelings and your thoughts is important because it builds connections and helps boost your confidence.
Being patient: I wanted to learn to be patient because that is something you need in your everyday life. When you are patient you are growing your character, it teaches you lessons and allows you to think so you make better descisions instead of acting out.
Working hard: This is something you should do in your everyday life because it helps you achieve your goals, it gives you more opportunities and it teaches you discipline.
Soft skills I focused on:
Confidence
Time management
Initiation
Communication
My Future Plan and Career Statement:
Although my internship gave me valuable experience in the classroom, I realized that teaching is not the career path I want to pursue. However, I genuinely enjoyed my time at the site, especially working with the students and being part of a supportive learning environment. This experience helped me grow personally and professionally, even if it confirmed that my passion lies elsewhere. After graduation, I plan to continue working at CVS Pharmacy, where I’ve already gained experience, and I’m excited to explore long-term opportunities in that field.
Career Questions and Answers:
I interviewed Mrs S, who is a special education teacher at Centennial Middle School.
Q: How did you choose the career that you’re in? A: "I have always loved kids and so from the beginning of time I’ve babysat kids and watched them grow from being a baby to eight or nine years old."
Q: Besides your education, what makes you successful?
A: "I think for me it has a lot to do with my family, raising my kids because they are five and seven. Try to be the best wife I can be, trying to be there for my family."
Q: If you could give me one piece of career advice that you thought could really help me what would it be?
A: "I think just keeping it fun so part of why I enjoy coming everyday is because I can build those relationships with kids so they can trust me and we can be goofy with each other and so we can tease each other and have fun."
Q: How do you deal with stress in your job?
A: "To balance stress I make sure to have things that I find really fun. I do love writing and I love poetry so I make sure to have lots of those kinds of things."
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: "I love working with the students, I think they’re super fun and can be really silly and they always keep me on my toes and even the sassiness is kind of entertaining."
Current Work Experience
I’m currently working as a pharmacy technician at CVS Pharmacy, where I go in after school to gain hands-on experience. This job helps me build my communication skills as I interact with patients and learn to solve problems quickly. I also get better at working efficiently and multitasking, all while making sure everything runs smoothly in a busy environment.
