WBL Internship: Pediatric Associates
The Colorado Department of Education defines "Professional" using the following descriptors:
time & work management
career literacy
grit resilience
work ethic; dependable & reliable
My Personal Definition:
A professional, in my opinion, isn't just about your work ethic and the points that the CDE makes. It's about the connections that you make and the attitude that you bring to your place of employment. The passion that you bring and the questions that you ask to show that you're engaged is part of being professional. To be a professional, you have to be willing to make changes and challenge youself to ultimately perfect your craft. Being a professional is the person who doesn't try to stand out, but the person who gives their job all that they have; the person with the most passion and grit.
My Future Plan and Career Statement
Through this internship, though I don't want to work with kids, I still want to work with people. I'm naturally social and outgoing, and being around and talking to people is something I'm passionate about. My plan is to attend either Colorado State University or University of Colorado in Boulder to pursue a major in pre-med, whether that be biomedical sciences or biology. I don't know specifically what I want to specialize in, but I do know that I ultimately want to go into either PA school or medical school to become a Physician.
My Personal Goals
Time Management: work towards procrastinating less and staying more on top of the simple tasks of life, that way I can jump onto more opportunties that come to me in the future.
Being assertive: not cowering when issues arise; facing it head on while staying calm. Being confident in myself, even if the situation isn't familar to me.
Managing Stress: cut out more time in my schedule to get work done; try to do more meditation/deep breathing exercises. Focus more on myself than worrying about others; do things that help me.
Soft Skills I Focused On:
Adaptability
Empathy
Assertive
Work Experience and Employment:
For the past 4 years, I have been working at San Juan Vet Clinic. I work primarily during the summer due to me being a 2-sport athelete and being involoved in clubs, but I still manage to work after school and on weekends between sports. For the first 3 summers I worked as a veterinary assistant. I worked alongside the doctor and was able to communicate with clients directly. I got to perform skills like perform bloodwork, administer vaccinations, and help fill medications prescribed by the doctor. Last summer, however, I worked as a receptionist at the same clinic. I learned a whole new set of skills, like how to schedule appointments, perform functions on the computer, and reach out to clients over the phone for any issues they were having.
Throughout high school, I've also been a dedicated pet-sitter for many different families. It taught be skills on how to be indepedent and the basic soft skills of animal care. It also helped me communicate better with owners while they were away. It helped me learn the importance of responsibily and honesty.
