The Colorado Department of Education defines "Professional" using the following descriptors:
time & work management
career literacy
grit and resilience
work ethic; dependable and reliable
My Personal Definition:
In my opinion professionalism is how you handle stressful situations, especially when dealing with uncooperative clients. It's also about being passionate about your work, as passion drives you to care for the patients while also maintaining professionalism. Additionally, it involves acknowledging mistakes and striving for improvement.
Career Q&A:
Question #1: What do you enjoy most about your job?
Answer: Building relationships with patients. Getting the dental services that they need and deserve. High quality dentistry.
Question #2: How many hours do you work?
Answer: I work from 35-40 hours Monday thru Thursday. Or sometimes on Fridays.
Question #3: How did you get this job?
Answer: I found this job on an online site. I've never did administrative work in the front, always in the back. I've been a dental assistant for 16 years. I've done 6 years of pediatric dentistry and 10 years General Practice(GP). I was just ready to do something different. I decided to apply.
Question #4: What is the most hardest part of your job?
Answer: The hardest part is when patients are not being nice. You know, every patient wants to come in and get the service they deserve. But their insurance doesn't always line up with their financial plans. So explaining it to patient can be difficult.
Question #5: What makes you feel accomplished?
Answer: When a patient leaves with the treatment that they need scheduled, being on the schedule, getting things done in a timely manner for the patients and the practice. Patients getting their pain alleviated and getting their treatment plan. Not just for me but for the patient and us as a practice.
Question #6: What was the greatest challenge you overcame?
Answer: Stepping away from the clinical field as a assistant and stepping into the administrative field. Because it is a very different field. I didn't know how I was going to be able to adapt doing it full time. It took some time and I believe that I executed it well.
