My Experience
Semester in-review:
Q: What is the most rewarding part of this job?
A: It's very satisfying when you can give someone a lightbulb moment. It's fun to see the patient come in a few weeks after meeting with you and feeling better after making the changes you created with them. It's motivating when people are making progress based on their goals based on the reccomendations you gave them.
Q: Who do you think thrives in this career?
A: Type A eldest daughters, to put it simply. But overall, compassionate, highly motivated, detail oriented individuals.
Q: Do nutrition degrees require a lot of advanced math and science classes?
A: It depends on what specific field you go into, some of them are definitely more challeneging than the others, but even then the math isn't crazy hard. You will have to take all the chemistry, human anatomy classes, and such.
Q: What is your least favorite part of being a dietitian?
A: Especially in clinical nutrition it can feel very unrewarding. You see a patient maybe once or twice and give them all this feedback, without ever really seeing if they made the changes. You do all you can, within the short amount of time you see them, but there's no follow up. It's also hard when people don't want to make change. Then you just feel frustrated that you know how to help them and they won't take action for themselves.
Q: What does success mean, to you?
A: My definition of success has evolved over ther years. I used to have the stereotypical list of things that would make me successful. But now, I think success is being able to look at your life and be stoked about it, despite the circumstances. Simply being able to look at my life and say I'm proud and I'm stoked.
Q: What advice would you have for young people, either considering entering this field, or just life advice in general?
A: For this degree specifically, make sure you're detail oriented and comfortable with math. For life in genral, I think it's importnat to consider all your options. You don't have to get a degree to be succesful. People thrive in trades and especially as a young person, there's a lot of pressure to decide the rest of your life right out of high school, which is crazy. If you in your soul. that maybe the traditional path of college isn't for you, then know that it's okay to do something different. There's not one right path.
Words from my mentor:
Current experience and employment:
Throughout high school, I worked several jobs. I started coaching gymnastics at the age of 14 and worked my way up to being a competitive coach around the age of 16. I worked there roughly 6-8 hours a week after school and occasionally over weekends doing birthday parties, cleaning, or traveling to competitions with my athletes.
At the beginning of my junior year, I committed to running my own photography business, mostly targeted towards senior photos. I ended up picking up two wedding opportunities, and a few family sessions. I did all of my marketing and relations which taught me scheduling, time management, and social skills. I ran this throughout my junior and senior years.
During my junior year, I picked up a second weekend job at Backstreet Bagel, as a multi-position employee. I worked as a barista, prepper/ cleaner, custom service/ register, and on the food line. I filled this position for 9 months until I received a new job offer.
Throughout all 4 years of high school, I was a part-time babysitter, house sitter, and pet sitter for many families. This taught me independence and interpersonal skills. I was able to learn responsibility and service to others.
Starting my senior year, I got a job at Starbucks as a barista. I plan to continue this job up until I leave for college, and possibly transfer to another location once I relocate for university.
Overall, having many job experiences has led me to be a self-sustaining individual with impeccable people skills and self-awareness. I juggled many jobs at once and learned that I can load a lot onto my plate if I stay organized. I got real-world experience and learned many soft skills that I would be at a disadvantage without.
I plan to attend a university, either Montana State University in Bozeman or Colorado State University in Fort Collins. I am going to major in philosophy and possibly double major or minor in photography or entrepreneurship. I aspire to be a self-motivated worker, always trying new things. I would like to own my own business of some sort and pursue careers that align with my passions. Overall, I want to make a change in the world, I want to help people, teach, support, and love others. I am not sure what I want my end career to be, I only know that I will find it as a learn more and focus on what I love. I also believe that I don't want a singular destiny, rather try all of them.
Goals I set for myself:
Time Management: Work towards being punctual, planning my schedule ahead of time, and not procrastinating all aspects of life
Organization: Keeping my room/ areas clean, keeping track of work, and having a neat planner set up. and setting reminders for myself.
Stress Management: Allocating work time and personal time, breathing techniques, slowing down my brain- allowing it to only focus on 3 things at a time rather than every possible thing, and doing things on time so I don't have to constantly catch up.
Soft skills I focused on:
Time Management
Listening
Asking valuable questions
Communication
Research
Organization
