Weighted classes are graded on a 5.0 scales instead of the regular 4.0. This means that in a weighted class, A's are worth 5 points, B's are worth 4 points, C's are worth 3 points, and so on. While in an unweighted class, A's are worth 4 points, B's are worth 3 points, and so on.
When GPA's are calculated, it takes the average of all the points earned from the student's classes. This means that the more A's the student has in weighted classes, the higher their GPA can go above a 4.0.
However, once their GPA gets over a 4.0, even A's in unweighted classes can bring their GPA down because now it affects the average of the grades negatively.
This means that even if the student pushes themself to take harder weighted classes, but then doesn't do as well as they would have in the unweighted version of that class, it will significantly lower their GPA.
