As summer begins to approach, so does baseball. So far, this season has seen some teams surprise everyone, some falling right into place, and some teams below expectations.
AL East- In the AL East, the Yankees currently sit at the top of the division at 15-11, despite losing Juan Soto to the Mets. In second place is the Boston Red Sox at 14-13 after a busy offseason picking up players like Alex Bregman and Garrett Crochet. The Toronto Blue Jays sit at 3rd in the division at .500, while the Rays and Orioles bottom out the east, with the Orioles disappointing people now after back-to-back strong seasons. They are still likely to make a comeback and get back in contention soon with the Red Sox and Yankees.
AL Central- In the AL Central, the Tigers sit at the top at 15-10 with the Guardians following behind at 14-10, as both teams look good and playoff-bound after making it last year. The Royals are sitting at about .500 at 13-14, but seem to be catching fire after an early-season slump. Bobby Witt Jr. is continuing to improve and is becoming the face of the Royals franchise as of now. The Twins are currently struggling at 10-16 and seem to be heading for a rebuild soon. At the dead bottom, though, are the Chicago White Sox after a historically bad season last year, with little signs of improvement this year. They do have some talent in the farm system and have a bright future, but for now, they seem stuck in misery.
AL West- In the AL West, the Rangers and Mariners are tied in first at 14-11, shaping up to make a good playoff race toward the end of the season. The Astros are currently at 13-12 despite losing key pieces like Kyle Tucker and Alex Bregman, but they likely won’t get much better than average this year. The Athletics and Angels are currently both at 12-13, which was to be expected despite the Angels starting hot. The Athletics are building a bright future currently and aren’t doing as badly as expected.
NL East- In the NL East, the Mets are sitting at the top at 18-8 after signing Juan Soto, although he isn’t hitting the best right now. The Phillies are at 13-13 and are currently on a 5-game losing streak, although many thought by this time they would be fighting with the Mets for the division. The Nationals, Marlins, and Braves bottom out the division, with the Braves expected to be better than currently, but have started the season cold. The Nationals and Marlins aren’t expected to do much this year, but they have some young talent they’re currently working with.
NL Central- In the NL Central, the Cubs are rolling right now and sit at 17-10 after acquiring Kyle Tucker. Everyone else in the division currently sits under .500, with the only team with a chance of making the playoffs outside of the Cubs being the Brewers. Yet they have just hit a poor losing streak. Players like Paul Skeenes of the Pirates and Elly De La Cruz of the Reds are still improving and developing into the faces of their franchises and the overall league. The Cardinals are heading for a rebuild soon, with some old pieces on their roster who can help a contending team.
NL West- The NL West currently has three teams contending for the playoffs: the Giants, the Dodgers, and the Padres. They are all fighting for the top of the division, but the Padres are currently ahead. The Diamondbacks are currently 14-11 and don’t seem to be contending after recently making the World Series. The Colorado Rockies are really struggling right now, with a 4-20 record. They’re on par with the White Sox and don’t have a lot to look forward to besides some younger pieces.
Overall, the season is still young. Teams hit bad losing streaks, hot streaks, and ups and downs from day to day. Most teams still seem able to make a playoff push and have nothing to worry about. Right now, the NL West looks fun with the Dodgers, Padres, and Giants battling for the division. The Mets and Cubs are also looking good in the NL after acquiring Juan Soto and Kyle Tucker, respectively. Teams like the Mariners and Rangers are making a good fight for the AL West right now, as are the Guardians and Tigers in the AL Central. The Yankees still look good, and the Red Sox seem to be a young and fun team that could be the real deal by October.
