For the November Edition Teacher Spotlight, I decided to interview Ms. Scapillato. Though I have never had her as a teacher, she has always been so kind to me. You can tell she truly cares about the students here and is such an amazing teacher.
Ms. Scapillato has been working at Kenmore West now for two years and worked at Harvey Austin Elementary School in Buffalo beforehand. She has always been into art, having had her first art show in the first grade. She graduated from Lancaster High School, went to college, and landed an office job. Soon enough she “got really bored” and decided to go to Buffalo State University. She got a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Art) for metalsmithing and jewelry design and a post-BACC (postbaccalaureate degree) for art education. She mastered at Buffalo State for creativity and change leadership.
In her free time, Ms. Scapillato loves to walk her dog and takes her dog to Griffis Sculpture Park. She loves to read and her favorite book is Leave the World Behind by Rumaan Alam. She also enjoys baking.
Ms. Scapillato’s favorite part of teaching is watching the kids make their artwork, and then see them super excited about it and light up. “I know it's super corny, but it's the truest truth I can tell.” Ms. Scapillato loves to teach art, but her favorite thing to teach is anything 3D and sculptures, and she loves teaching anything involved with clay. When asked if she has any advice to the students of West, she said, “Communicate with your teachers what you're doing and what you need because it gives trust and honesty in the classroom and that way we as teachers can know what we need to do for you. As far as art goes, just try. Just try.”
Ms. Scapillato really is such a wonderful teacher and person. Her passion for art and teaching is so obvious and it reflects onto everyone she teaches–and even people that she doesn't teach. She is an inspiration to all and I really appreciate her for that.
