Teacher. Motivator. Inspiration. Gen-Z?!? If you’re wondering if you read that right, no need to do a double take. It is true: Miss Butler, the youngest teacher in the school made her debut teaching here at West this year. This young tech teacher has dreamed of becoming a teacher her whole life and has now reached her goal. She first started on this path by graduating high school early. Being a whole year ahead allowed Miss Butler to graduate college early as well. Luckily, she was able to get a teaching position right away since she knew that there were opportunities and didn’t want them to go away, which was also a motivating factor in her early graduation. In preparation for this goal, she shared that the only thing that she really had to do was take extra classes earlier on in high school. Now, although she had known she wanted to be a teacher “easily since preschool,” she was unsure of what subject. While in college, she realized that she wasn’t the greatest at art, but found that she was actually very good at technology, and it helped that she found it interesting due to its fun and hands-on content. So now she teaches Robotics and 8th-grade Tech.
Miss Butler says that Robotics is definitely her favorite class to teach. It’s a mostly project-based class, and she loves that the students can experiment and get used to lots of trial-and-error methods. This is also because she enjoys teaching tenth and eleventh grade the most. She thinks that in teaching those grades specifically, she can give the students a really good experience in relationship building. Since she is young she says she understands what they’re going through and has very genuine interactions with them. However, she of course loves her eighth graders too. 8th grade classes were hard to get used to as a first-year teacher but she explained how both she and her students were able to make good adjustments and now she sees that they are all really sweet.
In addition to the classes that Miss Butler teaches, she also advises the Tech Club! They meet nearly every day and she always looks forward to getting new members interested in technology. If you happen to be interested, stop by Room 105 after school to join! Even through just a quick interview with Miss Butler, I was able to gather how great of a teacher and person she is. She radiates pure positivity and has a super fun and lighthearted personality. After meeting her just once, I feel so inspired to take one of her tech classes. She makes a subject that can be rather complex seem fun and easy to learn which is what already makes her such a great teacher. A fun fact about Miss Butler is that she says she gets mistaken for a student at least once a week (on a good week). But usually it's two to three times! She claims she doesn’t mind it though, and she thinks it’s kind of funny.
In short, Miss Butler is a great teacher that Ken West is lucky to have. She works every day to build good relationships with her students and make lessons that are fun and helpful. She’s already made lasting impacts on many of her students and has hundreds more kids to inspire in her bright future. If you ever get the chance to take one of her technology classes, I would highly recommend it. And if that’s not for you, definitely try to check out West Tech, our technology club, after school at some point. Thank you, Miss Butler, for all that you do! And congratulations on making your legacy as the youngest teacher in our school!
