Journalism is a very fun and interesting elective to consider taking! If you enjoy writing and learning about what it takes to be a journalist, then this is the class for you. You get to write for The Blue Devil Beat every month about any topic that interests you. You also have the option of working on the website design of our digital school newspaper. I highly recommend this class! Here is what some of the students in this class this year have to say about it:
Metta Sagurney: “Journalism is a wonderful creative outlet and a fun way to express your passions.”
Ahren Pavel: “I think journalism is a very cool opportunity to practice creative writing and writing in general. It helps open you up to more social opportunities, as you might have to interview others who aren't in your main group of friends. Overall, it's good for practicing writing and your social skills.”
Olivia Mock: “Journalism has allowed me to express myself through creative writing! Overall, it has made me a better writer, reader, and editor! I am definitely more confident in myself as a journalist and a writer because of this elective. I totally recommend Journalism and Mrs. Lee is the best teacher for it!”
Maisy Fleming: “Journalism is not only about writing stories for people to hear, but also learning about what is going on in the world and understanding the power your words have.”
Analis Cirino: “Not only is it a creative outlet students can use freely, but Journalism can also connect you with so many different people. It’s an amazing opportunity to interact with more people at the school that you wouldn’t have otherwise.”
Sydney Crone: “I love Mrs Lee. She is the best teacher ever and is so so awesome. The class is very easy and also so fun. I look forward to it every other day and I wish it was an everyday class. It makes me so happy. You have the freedom to write about pretty much whatever interests you and it's an opportunity to make a lot of new friends.”
Aislyn O’Malley: “I think Journalism might be my favorite class I've ever taken ever. It gives us the ability to write about pretty much whatever we want for the school newspaper, which I think is an important piece of our school community. Journalism has given me a new perspective on news, reporting, and writing in general. Mrs. Lee is an absolute joy to be around, and it's nice to have a guaranteed class with my friends every other day. 11/10 would recommend this class.”
Patrick Kinsella: “I heavily enjoy Journalism because it’s a pretty open and simple course. Mrs. Lee is a calm, laid-back teacher, allowing for a great environment with the students in the class. In Journalism you’re free to write about really anything, discussing various interests.”
Note:
This year, the Journalism Elective runs all year, every other day. It is a half-credit course through the English Department. The class also qualifies as an elective that promotes civil participation, so it will help achieve your NYS Seal of Civic Readiness diploma enhancement. See your school counselor right away to have it included in your course schedule next year!
