One of Kenmore West's more popular clubs is the Business Club! It is ever growing and more students attend every week! The club provides a second home for many aspiring hard-working students who plan on careers in the business world. It has many leadership positions to encourage students' participation in real-life scenarios. The club holds many events throughout the year, such as Spring Slam and the Super Smash Brothers Competition. Spring Slam is a teacher vs student basketball competition that took place for the first time last school year on March 16th. The entire school was called to the gym where after a series of student basketball games, the winner of each bracket formed one team to face the teachers. Students cheered for their favorite teachers and students. Ultimately, the teachers clinched the win in a close game that ended with a score of 46-44. The Super Smash Brothers Competition is new to Kenmore West this year and will be taking place December 5th, after school in room 317. Students can pay $5 to compete in a Smash Bros tournament to win gift cards up to $35 to E-Shop.
Business club members volunteer to help the community. Last winter a group of students went to Hearts for the Homeless, a nonprofit organization that collects used clothes and gives them a new purpose. Already this year club members have volunteered with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Students in the club say that the positive atmosphere created in the club is always comfortable to new members and allows returning students to have a great time.
This month students Scarlett Anderson and Maddy Greene partnered with 8th grader Nyla Moore to run a winter clothing drive. Warm Hugs for the Homeless is an organization started in 2018 to help clothe homeless people in Western New York with warm coats and gloves during the frigid winters. DECA is a business organization that is incorporated in the KW Business Club for high school and college students around the globe looking to develop leadership and problem-solving skills. The program ensures that the future generation is equipped with relevant information to guide them through their next chapter of life. As part of a DECA competition, Maddy and Scarlett are helping organize a project event called The Community Giving Project, which is when you collect donations and raise funds to give to an organization/charity. All the clothing collected will be given to the Salvation Army for further distribution. A bin at the single point of entry at West is where students can drop off donations. They are accepting new and gently used hats, gloves, and scarves. Being new to Ken West, Scarlett was interested in becoming an avid part of her community. She knew that this was the perfect opportunity. The students will be going to Rochester in March where they will present their project and success with the rest of the state. This is the first year that Kenmore West will be attending the DECA conference. More information about DECA can be found at https://www.deca.org/compete.
If you are interested in joining the KW Business Club, the club meets every Tuesday after school in room 317. If you have any questions, feel free to email Mr. Warchocki who is always looking for new members.
