On December 9th, the Kenmore West Student Council hosted the Tinsel Ball! The capacity for this dance was capped at 400 students; Student Council members expected tickets to sell rather quickly, but they did not. Overall, attendance seemed to include mostly upperclassmen. With such low ticket sales, the dance was open to authorized outside guests. This was great for students who had dates from other schools. They were able to fill out a form to purchase tickets.
Since this is not one of the most popular dances of the year, as compared to Homecoming, the line to enter moved very quickly. There was the usual walk through the metal detectors, and if you had a small clutch you walked through the small gym for it to be checked. School IDs and tickets were checked just before entering the gym foyer, and if you asked nicely they let you keep your ticket as a memorabilia piece. When walking into the gym, students stopped to take pictures and adjust to the atmosphere. Some of the songs were awesome due to requests from students, like “Crusin’ for a Brusin’” from Teen Beach Movie and “Party in the USA” by Miley Cyrus. Some students expressed disappointment with the DJ, due to some music choices played, as it wasn't as up-to-date with what they were used to. It was later said that DJ Extreme, our usual, was booked for the night and he could not be there with us. (see video below) Students made the best of their experience, dancing in large dance circles and making memories. About halfway through the dance, a student thought it would be funny to throw a fart bomb on the ground. This led the students in the center to flood into the outer ring of the gym. This unexpected event gave the night a funny flair.
The gym was beautifully decorated by student council members, with lights and a snowflake projector to give a wintery feel. The Kenmore West Business Club held a coat check and concession stand where students could get refreshments and leave their warm belongings while dancing. There was a bright spirit in the air, and that was much needed as this is a stressful time for many when it comes to schoolwork and getting everything done before the break. The dance ended promptly at 10:00 pm and students were happy to head home and get much-needed rest. Overall I would say this was a successful way to gain student engagement during this cold time of December!
