On September 16th, students attended the Welcome Back Dance run by the Community Club. Upon entry, there were many changes from past dances in terms of security. Mr. Leone checked IDs as students walked in and if you had a bag you walked through the small gym to get it checked. After that, Mr. Johnson stood by the cafeteria with metal detectors. Past that point, we handed in our tickets and then walked to the gym. Overall, everybody felt very safe and we are grateful for the measures taken by the district. Students who attend West are also friends with kids at East and other schools. Given this, I think it's appropriate to say students were disappointed to find out this dance was not open to students not from West. We are hoping by Homecoming this will change and boost attendance.
Students who attended presented themselves appropriately and had a great demeanor. The DJ played very upbeat music that was trendy, including songs like “Party in the USA” and “Cotton Eyed Joe.” The students loved dancing and creating cipher circles. There was a great sense of community and school spirit in the air; the students were together laughing and having a great time. Ms. Reidell sold concessions outside the gym, with refreshments and snacks at an affordable price so that everyone stayed hydrated and energized. Students say it was “the break they needed'' and “a great way to meet new people.” After the dance it was apparent everyone had a fantastic time. It was a great way to start this new school year!
