The Kenmore West fall play was The Outsiders adapted By Christopher Sergel based on the novel by S.E. Hinton. The novel, which Hinton started writing when she was in high school, tells the story of two teenage groups divided by social class and stereotypes: the Socs, the rich upper class, and the Greasers, who are poor, lower-class kids. In addition to the theme of social injustice, the play explores topics like loyalty, family, and self-identity.
The cast which included 15 seniors gave a strong performance, each making their character their own. All of the actors did a great job showing the tension and struggle between the two groups. It was clear that a lot of preparation was done at rehearsals and at home to memorize all the lines. Particularly strong performances were given by the three main characters of the play Shaw Freeman who played the role of Dallas, Amara Gomez who played the role of Johnny, and the lead role, Gabriella Pilat who played Pony Boy. Amara brought a vulnerability to the role of Johnny; the final monologue was given with such emotion and it really showed the development of the character throughout the play. Gabriella was perfectly cast in the role of Pony Boy; many times she was on stage by herself telling the story to move the play from scene to scene. All three of the lead characters interacted well with each other showing their bond and family-like relationship.Â
All the behind-the-scenes elements helped to make for an amazing production. The lighting and sound effects, in particular for the fight scenes and final rumble, helped to create intense and powerful moments on stage. The change in scenery helped to move the play from one scene to the next. The music took you back in time to when the play took place.
The play was amazing, and the actors and crew did a great job and deserved the standing ovation they received!
