On January 5th, the 82nd annual Golden Globes Awards aired on CBS, hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser. Throughout the night, both movies and television shows won awards for phenomenal performances, directing, scores, and much more.
A notable sweep was FX’s Shōgun, which won Best Television Drama Series. Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada were awarded Best Actor and Actress in a Drama Series, and Tadanobu Asano won Best Supporting Actor.
Emilia Pérez, a Netflix original movie-musical, won quite a few awards too. Best Motion Picture - Both Musical and Non-English Language, Best Original Song for “El Mal,” and Zoe Saldaña won Best Supporting Actress. This film’s wins sparked quite the debate online, with many criticizing the movie for its misrepresentation, what many viewed as less-than-phenomenal original music and the film’s use of AI.
Adrien Brody won Best Male Actor for The Brutalist, a film about an architect coming to America to escape war. The Brutalist also won Best Motion Picture - Drama. This film also sparked some debate online, similar to Emilia Pérez, for its use of AI.
A win that came as a surprise to many was Flow, a Latvian film that won Best Animated Motion Picture, beating out its fellow nominees and huge box office successes Inside Out 2, Moana 2, and The Wild Robot, along with Memoir of a Snail and Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.
Wicked won the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award, a relatively new award, only ever previously won by Barbie in 2023. Wicked made $635 million worldwide since its release.
Fernanda Torres won Best Female Actress for her performance in I'm Still Here. Her win became a heart-warming, full-circle moment, as her mother Fernanda Montenegro was nominated for the same award in 1999.
There were many other notable nominations and wins this year. Demi Moore won for her performance in the bone-chilling horror movie The Substance, making this her first-ever Golden Globe in her 44 years of acting. Some other winners include Sebastian Stan for his performance in A Different Man, Keiran Culkin for A Real Pain, Jean Smart for Hacks, Jeremy Allen White for The Bear, Jodie Foster for True Detective, Jessica Gunning for Baby Reindeer, Colin Farrell for The Penguin, and Ali Wong for Single Lady.
Movies and television would be nothing without the directors, writers, producers, crew, composers, and so many more vital roles. Some got recognized this year, including Brady Corbet for The Brutalist, Peter Straughan for Conclave, and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for Challengers.
