Petey USA is an indie rock artist with five albums, including his newest release, Oooo. My personal favorite songs by him are “Spirit Animal,” “California,” and “The Yips.”
“Spirit Animal” starts off with a fast, catchy beat, with lyrics that are relatable but funny. I like this song because the instrumentals in the background are very interesting, and the witty lyrics are memorable.
“California” is a song about the narrator starting over in California. The lyrics show that changing where you live doesn't immediately make you happier, but California makes his depression feel more serene and poetic. The lyrics tell the story that he leaves his town and an ex-partner to relax in California and disconnect from his old life.
“The Yips” is a song with a story that changes throughout the song. The song is based on the condition that occurs in performers and athletes, where they lose the ability to perform fine motor skills and basic movements. In the middle of the song, he is looking for somebody to blame for his sudden paralysis. At the end of the song, he decides to accept himself instead of quitting.
His album The Yips simulates the different tables in a fictional bar named The Yips Tavern or Yip Saloon. Each song represents different patrons at the bar with different but similar struggles and problems. Petey writes from the different perspectives of the people talking about their troubles in life.
