Stick Season is finally here! For those unfamiliar with the term “Stick Season,” Noah Kahan best describes it as “A time of year in Vermont…when all the leaves are off the trees and it was a term used by some of the older folks…to describe this really miserable time of year when its just kind of gray and cold and there's no snow yet.” A more simplistic definition would be the time of year when all the leaves have fallen but the snow has yet to fall. This term has risen to fame due to Noah’s hit song titled “Stick Season.” These next 14 blurbs will delve into the coziness that is Noah Kahan’s best-known album, Stick Season. Each song will be linked, so if you choose, you may tap each track title to take a listen.
The meaning of this song's title describes how harsh people who grow up in Vermont and other states in the New England area feel during this time of year. Kahan takes us through his journey of trying to overcome this negative mindset and asks his intended audience to be understanding while he goes through this transitional time.
2.“Stick Season”
This is the self-titled track on Noah Kahan's third album, Stick Season, released in October of 2022. This song is all about the feeling of change and taking in the moments that come with it. The lyrics and instrumentals capture the essence of the seasons changing, specifically fall into winter. This track gets you ready for the beauty that is to come when listening to this album.
3."All My Love”
“All My Love” paints the picture of Noah's perspective on his own life while still reminiscing about the relationship he had with someone who moved away. He thinks back to how things used to be when they were together, but he is now removing their connection away from his mindset because he knows that at the end of the day, he still loves her but they are on two separate journeys.
This heartfelt track has themes of love, longing, and hope. Noah sings about a relationship that is hanging on by a thread. He has a feeling of loss and blankness which is why throughout this song he longs for the other person in this problematic relationship to call him back.
5.“Come Over”
Kahan hopes that he will be able to find the meaningful connection he has been missing through this song. His hopes for a relationship or friendship with someone who will genuinely care about him shine through the chorus when Kahan invites the people he has been talking with to “Come Over.”
6.“New Perspective”
“New Perspective” is a song all about growth and self-reflection. Noah writes about seeing things differently after experiences specific to him. The lyrics reflect on lessons learned from past mistakes and the importance of growth. Sometimes it's important to take a step back to reassess everything and the opportunities that are to come in order to have a better understanding of life.
Through thick and thin, life and death, Kahan will travel through anything for his partner. This track describes the lengths that Noah is willing to go to in order to keep the relationship he currently has. Its acoustic guitar is consistent with the rest of the album and fits perfectly with the other mellow tracks in this album.
8.“Orange Juice”
This is one of, if not the most, devastating song on the album. This track tells the story of someone who was struggling with an alcohol addiction but is now on a healing journey. “Come over, the party's gone slower and no one will tempt you, we know you got sober. There's orange juice in the kitchen, bought for the children. It's yours if you want it.” This lyric shows what families of addicts have to do sometimes. They offer orange juice because anything with alcohol is off the table. The title “Orange Juice” symbolizes a fresh start and hope for a better future.
9.“Strawberry Wine”
The description of two people simply being in each other's presence and loving every moment they have together describes this song perfectly. This song shares a track title name with Deanna Carter’s song “Strawberry Wine.” It describes young love and how even though you may only be together for a short time, it could be some of the best moments of your life.
10.“Growing Sideways”
This track is an extremely personal and vulnerable one to Noah Kahan. It delves into the struggles that come with personal growth. “Growing Sideways” explores the idea of feeling stuck when trying to grow instead of flourishing like others around you. You may try your best yet also have personal setbacks while some people are thriving. Growth is not always a straight path; there can be moments when you feel like you're not growing at all. This song puts that feeling to words perfectly.
11.“Halloween”
Kahan mentions the “ghost” who still haunts him, who in fact turns out to be someone who he cared about very deeply. The mention of the word Halloween simply states that Noah is still being haunted by this individual continuously, even though both of them have “moved on.”
12.“Homesick”
If you couldn’t tell from the title of this track, this song is about missing home. “Homesick” explores ideas of nostalgia and reminiscing about the place you grew up in. Noah writes about his desire to return to places and people he is familiar with. This song captures the bittersweetness of being away from home.
13.“Still”
This penultimate track displays Kahan’s self-reflective thoughts about not wanting a prior relationship to be over. The word still indicates a sense of present tense, although the relationship in reference, belongs in the past. Kahan’s heartbreaking plea to stay in this connection makes it a perfect song for the end of the album: not wanting things to end.
14."The View Between Villages”
The final track of Stick Season is “The View Between Villages.” This track is a very earthy song that has very natural songwriting. This song embraces the feeling of belonging and a sense of increasing self-worth. Kahan captures the bittersweet feeling of coming home after a long time away. He is trying to accept himself going forward and cope with the bad portions of his life. It also symbolizes trying to move on and continue with a new chapter of his life.
