Olivia:
I saw Wicked: For Good in theaters, right after it came out, and I loved it!! I actually prefer the songs and dances in the first movie, but there are more plot twists in the second. We also actually get to see the iconic Tin Man, Scarecrow, Lion, and Dorothy of the original Wizard of Oz film. They chose to leave Dorthy’s face out of the movie, which I think was a great choice as it brought a mysteriousness to her and made me wonder about her character more. I also think the costumes were beautiful in this movie. The Tin Man costume and Scarecrow looked so real! However, while Glinda’s dresses were very well made to fit her figure, I think the dress for her wedding should have been more extravagant. I feel like Glinda would have gone all out for that event with a more fancy ballgown-style dress! A lot of fans did not like the silver gems on Glinda’s shoulders, drawing more attention to her collarbones, but I personally didn’t mind them and thought it was definitely something the Good Witch would wear to dress up her outfit. Fans have varying opinions on Wicked: For Good, some praising Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande for their acting performances, strong vocals, and emotional depth between their characters, because of their real-life friendship. However, others say that the film felt rushed and less memorable compared to the Wicked musical. Although, it did score around a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes! I definitely agree with some of these fans, as I also think that their on-screen chemistry was very strong because of their off-screen friendship. And I do not think the movie felt rushed. I do not think that the film needs to be any longer than it already is, at 2 hours and 18 minutes. I also did not see the original Broadway musical, so I personally have nothing to compare Wicked: Part One and Wicked: For Good to. Overall, I would recommend this film to others if they want to see something extravagant and nostalgic that is based on the Wizard of Oz, a movie many love.
Andrew:
In 2024, I was lucky enough to see Wicked on Broadway. I was amazed at how good the entire production was. Between the lighting and flying monkeys, Wicked proved to be an unforgettable phenomenon. When I found out the Wicked movie was going to be split into two parts, with part one resembling Act One of the Broadway show and part two resembling Act Two, I was interested to see how Jon M. Chu would pull it off. Last year, I was thrilled to watch Wicked: Part One because of how much I loved the Broadway show. Ariana Grande was shockingly funny; she truly embodied the role of Glinda in a way I couldn't see anyone else doing. To put it in simple terms, Cynthia Erivo is a star. Her voice fit the role of Elphaba so perfectly. Cynthia and Ariana’s chemistry as best friends was the most touching part of the film. Wicked: Part One was done so well that I would consider it a perfect on-screen adaptation of the musical. I had very high hopes when it came to Wicked: For Good, given how amazing the first one was. When I saw the Broadway show, I loved all the unexpected twists that came with the second act and how everything connected back to the Wizard of Oz. Each time we learned the backstories of characters from The Wizard of Oz, I was overwhelmed with excitement. I wanted to feel the same way when I watched the second film, but I didn't. Maybe that's because I knew what to expect. I think fans who don't know the ending will enjoy this film more than someone who knows the epic conclusion of Wicked. I also thought the movie was too long. In the Broadway show, Act Two is around one hour long, but Wicked: For Good has a run time of 2 hours and 18 minutes. I think the longer runtime led me to be less interested in the things happening on the screen. There were two new songs added to this film, both of which were okay but hard to love on the first listen. One of the reasons people go see Wicked is to experience the showstopping songs. I wasn't in love with either of them, like how I love the original songs, which may be the reason why I prefer Wicked: Part One better. Wicked: For Good wasn't bad; it just didn't exceed my expectations that the first film set. I thought that they handled the character of Glinda very well. I loved seeing a more emotional side of her rather than an unserious, funny version. Boq was a shocking highlight of this film, and I thought Ethan Slater's acting and singing were fantastic. Cynthia Erivo delivered another excellent performance as Elphaba. Unfortunately, Oscar-winning Michelle Yeoh had a very underwhelming performance. Her singing was not comparable to the rest of the cast and her acting could've been more powerful. Overall, Wicked: For Good, was an okay conclusion to the Wicked films and a good adaptation of the Broadway musical.
