The Menu, released in 2022, is a horror and mystery movie that will leave you stunned. This 1 hour and 47 minute film shows the critiques the restaurant industry, the idolization of chefs, and the snobbery of the rich. Chef Slowik, played by Ralph Fiennes, is the chef of an exclusive restaurant on a remote island. “Foodies” were invited to try his prepared dishes, but what's to come is not at all what they expected. Margot, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, was not supposed to be among the other oblivious guests. It was a last-minute change by her date, Tyler, who asked her to come with him. She’s not a food critic like the rest of them, but accepted for Tyler’s sake. Little did the guests know, they weren’t really there to try the courses. Instead, the chef had sinister things planned for them. Why would he do this? People eat at expensive restaurants, including his, just to say that they had the privilege of going and are rich enough to afford it. But no one actually appreciates his food anymore. This was an act of revenge for him. As each dish is served, they become more disturbing by the second. The final course is the “finale” of this charade. But first, Margot claims she is still hungry. Margot requests a meal from Slowik that he can’t refuse to make. Does Margot's cleverness allow her to escape and stop the final “course,” or will she have the same fate as the others? Watch on Netflix to find out! This was such a suspenseful movie, and every scene has an unsettling feeling that leaves you curious about what’s to come next. Unlike some horror movies where there is a huge plot twist when something evil is revealed, this movie starts off with that uneasy feeling. By having this, we know something is coming, but not when. Margot's sentimental strategy for getting away adds a psychological aspect overall to the film as well!
