As of last Wednesday, the movie Fall came to Netflix, and I was very excited to watch it after I had heard about it a couple of years ago. I started watching it with only a little idea of the overall plot, and I found myself very shocked by the plot twists that were found throughout the movie. The main character Becky was a dedicated climber and thrill seeker who was accompanied in her adventures by her husband and best friend Hunter. After a climbing incident that resulted in the death of her husband, Becky completely shut herself down and kept closed off and away from the world. Through her grief, Becky’s father saw her slipping away and worried deeply about her state and her health. He actively tried to be present and supportive for her, although she rejected most of his attempts.
While Becky is lost in the depression of her mind, her friend Hunter reconnects with her a year after the accident to try to bring her back. Hunter proposes the idea that the two girls will leave and go on a climbing expedition in order for Becky to move on from the place she has been stuck in. Hunter decided that the girls' challenge would be the B-67 Tower, a 2,000-foot tower located in the desert, far from civilization. Once the girls make the climb, disaster strikes, and they find themselves stranded 2,000 feet in the air with extremely limited options. Throughout the movie, the girls find out things about each other as well as themselves. The movie finishes not very long after a major plot twist is revealed, adding to the entertainment and distress the viewer feels while watching.
Although the movie is not based on real events, it is inspired by the real KXT/KOVR radio tower located in Walnut Grove, California, and focuses on the intensity of climbing culture. Instead of using a green screen to depict the height of the tower, a 100-foot tower on a cliff was used for filming in order to really show the height of the tower throughout the movie. The movie Fall 2 started production in Thailand and is set for a 2026 release. I greatly enjoyed Fall and am looking forward to seeing what the next one has in store for viewers.
