I grew up playing with Barbies, I even got a Barbie Dreamhouse from Santa. So when I found out that a Barbie movie was going to be made, 7-year-old me was screaming. I remember before seeing the movie a lot of people were worried about the film. They were scared that it “wouldn’t live up to the hype” but wow, they could not have been more wrong.
The film stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling played the main characters of Barbie and Ken. Barbie: The Movie follows Barbie and Ken living in the vibrant and seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land. But when they get a chance to visit the real world, they quickly realize that everything is not as it seems.
The movie, by September 4, was estimated to have earned a whopping $1.4 billion at the box office only a little over a month after its release. That made the film's director/writer Greta Gerwig the first woman to direct and write a billion-dollar movie on her own. The movie as of right now has 9 nominations for the Golden Globes award, such as “Best Motion Picture Film” and “Best Screenplay.” Songs from the movie's soundtrack also made it onto the nominations list, such as “What Was I Made For” by Billie Eilish and “Dance the Night Away” by Dua Lipa.
Margot Robbie's performance as Barbie was phenomenal. My favorite moment in the entire movie was Barbie sitting down on a bench in the real world, looking around at people and witnessing emotions she had never seen or felt before, and in that moment she started to cry. This scene was so emotional and beautiful that in the theater I even started to tear up. It shows the extent to which women struggle every day from a fresh new perspective. Towards the end of the movie, we get a speech about the struggle of what is constantly expected out of women by Gloria, played by America Ferrera. Her performance in this scene was so raw and genuine that every person in the audience had chills.
I would give anything to go to the theater and watch this movie for the first time again. Going to the theater dressed in pink, everyone laughing together and crying together at parts was such a positive experience. Barbie was fantastic and I can only hope that the cast and crew receive all the awards because they are more than deserving.
