Whether it’s the year’s biggest blockbuster, your favorite Netflix character, or the most viral celebrity, for most, Halloween Costumes are a callback to the year’s most defining moments in media. There are the typical timeless costumes that almost every kid has been at some point– zombies, princesses, witches, ghosts–but each year new movies, shows, video games, and celebrities rise to popularity and make for some familiar faces during trick or treating. Halloween 2023 is no exception, and I think we can all agree there are a few costumes we’ll all be seeing this October 31st.
5. Wednesday Addams
Love the show or hate the show, you can’t deny Wednesday’s record-breaking acclaim last fall. The show’s almost three-month stretch on Netflix’s top ten list, numerous inspired TikTok trends, and specific popularity with younger kids definitely secures its spot as one of 2023’s most popular costumes. If you’re handing out candy this year, I guarantee you’ll be giving some to a few little girls in all-black and braided pigtails.
4. Spiderman
Thanks to the Spiderverse movies, there are more spider-people than ever. It doesn’t matter if you’re more like Peter Parker, Miles Morales, or Gwen Stacy–anyone can wear the mask. Whether you like Spiderman 2002, The Amazing Spiderman, Spiderman 2017, one of the many in the Spiderverse series, or you’re a comic book fan, the intricate and distinctive design of each version of Spiderman makes for unique but instantly-recognizable costumes that have been worn for decades. And with the constant release of new Spiderman content, this costume will always be a staple.
3. Onesies
Onesies are not only the most comfortable option, but they're extremely versatile. There are onesies of any TV show or movie character you can think of–Disney characters, superheroes, animals, aliens, foods–anything. Onesies will always be the perfect timeless and easy costume if you’re going for a more relaxed Halloween.
2. Inflatable Costumes
By far the funniest type of costume- inflatable cartoon characters, animals, and random objects definitely draw attention. Every year Spirit Halloween puts out their collection of costumes the size of four students, and every year middle schoolers flock to the shelves to buy them. I don’t know about you, but I still remember the kids who wore those inflatable T-Rex costumes and took up half the hallway, and the way they had to comically shuffle to every class. I hope these costumes are popular again this year because if anything, they are wildly entertaining to watch.
1. Barbie
I think we all knew this was coming, but in my opinion, Barbie will be this year’s most iconic costume. Whether she’s by herself, with other Barbies, with Ken, or even with Oppenheimer, blonde wigs and hot pink are taking over this Halloween. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie made absolute waves this summer, and her use of bright, colorful patterns for the characters' clothing in Barbieland make for some great costume choices. Neon 80s-themed roller skates, sequined disco pantsuits, and bright pink cowboy outfits make it hard to choose just which Barbie (Or Ken) to be, but really, any choice is a good one.
