Gloria Steinem is an American journalist, feminist organizer, and social activist who has made an immense impact on women and children everywhere. Steinem was very popular during the 1960s - 70s, but continues to work hard. She has spent decades traveling in multiple countries to lecture, as well as frequently speaking on social media on issues of equality. She founded the New York and Ms magazines, and is the author of multiple books, including Outrageous Acts, Everyday Rebellions, and As If Women Matter.
Steinem co-founded the National Women’s Political Caucus, the Ms. Foundation for Women, the Free to Be Foundation, and the Women’s Media Center in the United States. These are organizations that are dedicated to training, educating, and supporting women who search for work at all levels of government. Along with this, Steinem helped found Equality Now, Frontline Women’s Fund, and Direct Impact Africa. These are humanist organizations that fight for equality in both feminism and racial issues. One quote that frames who she is as an activist is, “We’ve begun to raise daughters more like our sons…but few have the courage to raise our sons more like our daughters.”
Steinem’s impact doesn’t stop at feminism. In 1993, the activist produced an Emmy Award-Winning TV documentary: Multiple Personalities: The Search for Deadly Memories, based on her concern for child abuse. Steinem’s passion for preventing violence led her to co-produce, along with Amy Richards, a series of 8 documentaries on violence against women around the world in 2016.
Steinem’s work hasn’t gone unnoticed. She has won multiple awards for her social activism. These include her 2013 Presidential Medal of Freedom, awarded by Barack Obama, her 2019 Freedom Award from the National Civil Rights Museum, and her 2021 Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities.
Steinem’s limitless contributions to feminism and inclusion to every voice in the name of equality has led her to massive achievements, and she has helped pave the way for feminism. Even today, Steinem still speaks up about equality, abortion rights, and her history in interviews. Gloria Steinem is a role model for many, and her work should continue to inspire upcoming generations. You can find more information about her at gloriasteinem.com and nwpc.org.
