Andrew Digesare vs. Maisy Fleming
Throughout time, one of the biggest debates has been whether Christmas is better than Halloween or vice versa. It's a timeless debate that happens as soon as the temperature drops and the leaves fall. Today, Maisy Fleming and Andrew Digesare will settle this argument by giving their views on their favorite holiday!
Andrew:
As much as I love Christmas and the joy it brings, Halloween will always be the superior holiday for me. Don’t get me wrong, Christmas is an amazing holiday, but nothing compares to the scary feeling you get when Halloween arrives. Halloween deserves the same amount of attention as Christmas!
Maisy:
Although Halloween really does offer a fun time and a scary night, it really is just a night. People say “Christmas Season” for a reason! The songs, the food, and the memories that surround Christmas are really non-existent for Halloween. There are no consistent songs or foods that are traditional to Halloween, showing just how magical Christmas is.
Andrew:
I don't totally agree with you there. Halloween is most definitely a season. Practically all of October is dedicated to Halloween with there being decorations set up in stores and at people's houses. Although there are not as many Halloween songs as there are Christmas songs, you can't discredit “Monster Mash,” “Thriller,, “Somebody's Watching Me,” and more. I think the movies that come with Halloween are the best part of the holiday. Nothing beats watching something like Scream, Halloween, or Friday the 13th during October. Scary things may not be for everyone, but there are other Halloween activities that people can do, such as going to costume parties, hayrides, corn mazes, carving and painting pumpkins, or making pumpkin-flavored foods!
Maisy:
You've got a point there, but none of these things can compare to the feeling of happiness and relief that Christmas brings. The break from school is always a bonus for kids and the reunions with family and friends that aren’t always brought by Halloween. Christmas also brings a spirit that unites many people and makes them feel joyful and giving. Although this is not always the case, crime rates on Halloween tend to spike. There are also many activities surrounding Christmas and winter in general. There is skiing, sledding, playing in the snow, watching Christmas movies, drinking hot chocolate, ice skating, and so much more!
Andrew:
For most people, Halloween can be a chance to spend time with their family and friends. Lots of kids go trick-or-treating with their close friends or even their siblings. Halloween brings out the creative side of people. Nothing is more fun than picking a unique costume or matching with your best friends. It's fun to dress up as characters, people, and things you love. That is something Christmas doesn't do. As for the crime rate, the chances of robberies are higher due to time spent away from home. Vacations, Christmas parties, and shopping increase this risk. Just look at the movie Home Alone. I can't even begin to mention the loads of candy you get on Halloween night for free.
Maisy:
I see all of the good points you are making, but when left up to the students of Kenmore West, 80% decided that they preferred Christmas over Halloween. Many felt this way because they thought that Christmas brings people together and gives people a chance to feel a way that they only get to once a year. And nothing beats Christmas movies and music! Although I agree with the 80% who were Christmas lovers, both holidays do offer unique festivities that give people joy and laughter and both deserve attention and praise!
