By Bells Gressley
The language we speak carries too many rules,
too much to say and too few terms to use.
I long to convey what I carry in my heart
but no sentence I construct does my love justice.
So for a moment, I claim myself a florist
and craft a bouquet for you.
So for a moment, I forget English,
and hope that the flower’s forgotten language
shall express what words fail to.
Pink bluebells, a color to match your light.
Sweetness, admiration, gratitude:
all beautiful things the world can offer shine through the petals.
My appreciation for you runs as deep as its roots;
without you, value in the sweet of my life is lost.
Pink, like my heart which lays in your hand,
and my gratitude for how gently you’ve carried it these years.
Lily of the Valley, a flower to gift to those one loves,
if I could, I’d buy you fields full.
Joy, love, happiness, the things my life receives from your presence,
and sincerity and purity to sport your smile, the purest form of matter.
I would use the six petals of Alstroemeria to reveal
the six wonderful things of your soul:
compassion, patience, appreciation, humor, understanding, loyalty.
The silly things you say to shoo away my storm clouds,
the grin on my lips when you’re near,
the compassion pumping in your chest, beating to your own drum,
filling my life with the sun I need to bloom,
and the patience you show understanding
that I take time opening my petals,
the loyalty we share, years of us side by side never slipping.
Small gestures of appreciation making me feel worthy of this good.
I’d laugh, selecting a handful of roses, basic, yet beautiful.
One pink to signify simple happiness, subtle admiration, youthful love,
a yellow for the friendship we share, a source of serotonin like no other,
a bright spot in a sea of gray skies,
and a rainbow rose, my favorite, for the hope you instill in my life
when I feel there’s nowhere else to turn.
And last, a daisy, the birth flower of April,
as they say: April showers bring May flowers.
One daisy to celebrate the pure, genuine innocence of our lives connected:
a daisy to extend my grateful nature
for the life you’ve given me to cherish.
Thank you for the realization it is more impactful to live for someone
rather than die for them.
I craft this bouquet in my mind in hopes it says more than my words do,
making you understand that as these bloom by your bedside,
I bloom alongside you.
You are my sun, giving me the strength to open up,
and without you, I wither into someone I am not.
With you, life is beautiful.
I am beautiful.
