The beginning of November marks the start of my favorite season: The holiday season. With the holidays comes a lot of things–cold weather, shorter days, a sudden addiction to hot chocolate, and most importantly, a lot of days off. And what better way to spend your days off than reading a good book? Here are some books your fellow students think you should spend some time with.
Eighth-grader and member of Kenmore West’s Theater program Adriana Bueme recommends Hooky by Miriam Bonastre Tur, a graphic novel following two young witches navigating magic in a human world. As readers are enticed by the fun art style of the book, they follow the main characters, Dani and Dorian, on their mystical adventures. “I liked how it had a fantasy setting and the art style of the graphic novel really called out to me,” says Adriana when asked why she read the book. Currently, Hooky has three volumes published. Adriana compares Hooky to other graphic novels like The Moth Keeper by Kay O’Neill and Misfit Mansion by Kay Davault.
More titles recommended by students this month are:
The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey, a young adult sci-fi novel that follows Cassie Sullivan as she embarks on a journey to save her brother while navigating a world invaded by aliens. The 5th Wave is available in the KW library and Sora also with the other books of the series. It also has a movie adaptation.
The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, a thrilling young adult mystery book about a group of gifted teen detectives dedicated to solving cold cases. The Naturals is similar to A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder and shows like Criminal Minds and is available to check out in the KW library. This book also is part of a series, and Jennifer Lynn Barnes also has another popular book series, The Inheritance Games.
The Cruel Prince by Holly Black, book #1 in the young adult fantasy Folk of the Air series. It’s a fantastic mixture of romance, fantasy, and action. All books in the Folk of the Air series are available to check out both on Sora and the KW library.
