If you are looking for the perfect book series to read over Spring Break, or just in general, this article is perfect for you! These are some of my favorite series that I have read in the past as well as recently. These books have pulled me out of a reading slump and kept me from doom scrolling on my phone! If you want to start spending less time on your phone, reading is a really good way to distract yourself. You might have seen a lot of these books trending on TikTok, but they’re popular for a reason, and definitely worth the read. Enjoy!
1. Delirium Trilogy by Lauren Oliver
This trilogy is a young adult dystopian series where love is banned by the government and is known as a “dangerous disease.” If one is infected by love, they’re cured once they turn seventeen years of age. The story follows seventeen-year-old Lena Haloway, who falls in love before getting cured, and has to navigate life through the control of the government and the consequences that come with breaking the law. I absolutely loved this series and totally recommend it!
I was always wondering what would happen next and if she would escape the tight hold society had on her. I found the concept of this trilogy really interesting and I still haven't found anything like it. I really like the idea of the thing that many humans live for, being banned. It's inevitable that someone would fall in love, knowingly or not, and have to make the difficult choice of staying and submitting to the rules or following their heart and starting a new journey far away from everyone they’ve ever known. It’s almost like Lena breaks the spell everyone was under and makes people realize the reality they’re living in, and that they are capable of loving and being loved. At the start, she really struggled with accepting her feelings for Alex Sheathes, but throughout the books, she came to terms with the fact that she can’t help the way she feels, and she doesn’t want to “control” it or get it “cured.”
2. The Housemaid trilogy by Freida McFadden
The Housemaid trilogy is a psychological thriller that follows Millie, a young woman looking for an escape from her past, to be a housemaid for the wealthy Winchester family. She was excited to start her new job, but she soon noticed how twisted the family really is. She starts to realize that not everyone is who they seem and that they are actually quite sinister. The couple has secrets that could rip their lives apart, as well as Millie’s. I read the books and watched the movie, and I loved both!
The film is a bit more violent than the books, but it makes it more interesting to watch, and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. The film stars Sydney Sweeney as Millie, Amanda Seyfried as Nina Winchester, and Brandon Sklenar as Andrew Winchester! Both are really good, but I recommend reading the books before watching the movie, for more context as to what’s happening!
3. The Empyrean Series by Rebecca Yarros
At the moment there are only three books of this series released: Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, and Onyx Storm, but it was announced by the author that there will be two more books we can expect soon (titles unknown)! The series follows the protagonist Violet Sorrengail (also known by her nickname Violence), as she trains to be a dragon rider in an elite war college. The books show the horrendous reality of war as Violet, Xaden, and her friends fight to survive and keep their bonded dragons alive. Xaden Riorson is the Wingleader of Fourth Wing at the college Violet attends as a cadet.
There are different sections of the college, and Violet falls under Xaden’s leadership. But they soon realize that their relationship is more than just a leader and a cadet. As both of them navigate threats, danger, betrayal, and grief, they grow closer than ever, even though the war is trying to tear them apart. However, this isn’t a typical “love story,” but instead an enemies-to-lovers story. When I say enemies, I truly mean it, as at the start of the first book, Xaden was on a mission to kill Violet. I really enjoyed this series, showing humans and dragons working together through a special bonded connection. If you love fantasy books, this is definitely the series for you!
4. Letters of Enchantment Duology by Rebecca Ross
In Divine Rivals and Ruthless Vows, the main characters Roman Kitt and Iris Winnow are rival journalists competing for the same columnist position. They soon realize they have a connection that's more than “rivals.” Using magical typewriters, they write letters to each other during the war between a god and a goddess who were once in love. Not only do their letters keep the connection between them strong, but they’re also used to update and warn each other on the advancements of the war.
When they are both sent to the front lines to report on what they see, they realize the feelings they have for each other are stronger than they thought. The characters work through the grief and devastation of war, and also the hope that being in love brings. The couple is torn apart at times, but they always seem to find their way back to each other. The enemies-to-lovers trope is a must-have for fantasy novels, and I love the magical world these books are set in!
5. Once Upon A Broken Heart Trilogy by Stephanie Garber
This trilogy follows Evangeline Fox and the Prince of Hearts (also known as Jacks) through a magical world of curses, love, and broken promises. These books are connected to the author's other series, Caraval, which takes place before Once Upon A Broken Heart. The Prince of Hearts was cursed so that his kiss is lethal, except for his one true love, who will be immune to the kiss. In Caraval, he found the girl that he could finally be happy with… or so he thought.
In Once Upon A Broken Heart, Evangeline Fox first makes a deal with the “devil” (The Prince of Hearts) to stop the wedding of her beloved Luc Navarro to her stepsister Marisol. She is desperate to put an end to this betrayal, and she believes Luc is under a love spell. The Prince of Hearts is one of the Fates, so he is able to enchant humans and control aspects of them. Little does Evangeline know, the Prince of Hearts is truly ruthless and doesn’t care what happens to anyone, as long as it benefits him in some way. She soon regrets asking him for help, but in the second and third books, finds herself needing him once again. In this twisted series of bargains and lies, Evangeline and the Prince of Hearts find themselves pulled to each other more than just because of the deal they made. Although he is a Fate and she is a human, will she be the one to break the curse of his killer kiss? Read to find out!
