Do certain images, memories, associations or any other thoughts come to mind while you listen to your favourite tunes? How are these thoughts and feelings impacting your experience of the music?
Or maybe it depends on what you're doing, whether you're focused on the music you're listening to or if it's on in the background during your daily commute. Not all music listening experiences are the same after all.
This study is about music videos and visual associations with music. For the purpose of this study, a music video is any video which integrates a song or album with images and is produced for promotional or artistic purposes. This includes music videos for singles ("traditional" music videos), recordings of performances such as livestreams, and fan-made videos.
For the purpose of this study, MUSIC VIDEOS ARE NOT: videos presented during live concerts on big screens or any other multimedia presented at live concerts, Music videos are not songs presented in advertisements or in movies.
If you want to tell us about your listening experiences with movie music (soundtracks), please feel free to do so in the weekly questionnaire part of the study! We want to know about these experiences too, but for the purpose of this research we want to keep that separate from other music videos. 😁
We are currently looking for participants to take part in our music and memory study. Participation is easy and fun! The only requirement is that you have an Android smartphone that you already use to stream music on.
How the study works
The study works by collecting data about your music listening experiences through an app called MuPsych. MuPsych was developed by music psychology researchers in order to get real-time self-report data from participants about how music affects them in everyday life. When you play music through your phone, the app prompts you to answer some questions about your mood, where you are, why you are listening, and who you are with. This is the data we use to generate your personalised listener profile.
YOUR DATA IS 100% SAFE! MuPsych will never make your data accessible to third parties and does not sell your data to other apps or services. The data you provide is anonymised and only used for academic research.
All data is stored and handled according to the Finnish National Board of Research Integrity (TENK: Tutkimuseettinen neuvottelukunta) and GDPR guidelines. Any data you share is used solely for the purpose of the research project. All data are anonymised prior to analysis.
If you have any questions about the app, including data collection and handling procedures, please feel free to contact me at jonawils@jyu.fi
Unfortunately, this study is only available for Android users at this time. .

Why are we doing this study?
This study is part of my PhD research at the University of Jyväskylä under the supervision of Dr Suvi Saarikallio and Dr Marc Thompson. This research is affiliated with and supported by the Centre of Excellence in Music, Mind, Body and Brain.
My research looks at music video experiences from a music psychology perspective. I am interested in whether having seen a music video affects your perception of the music, and if so, how?
