The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted plans across most CCAs, including the media clubs of all JCs. As a result, many have missed out on many experiences and exposure that were only possible in pre-COVID circumstances. Undaunted by the volatile and challenging situation, a team was formed to organise the Hwa Chong Studio Symposium 2021 (HCSS), a first-ever inter-JC symposium targeting local media CCAs. The purpose of the symposium was to facilitate inter-school interactions and collaborations as well as for participants to gain valuable insights into the workings of the media field, through the invitation of guest speakers. Ultimately, we hoped to further deepen and inspire participants’ passion and interest in the media industry.
HCSS successfully attracted over 60 participants across 9 JCs to join us virtually on 18 and 19 March 2021. The symposium was graced by renowned home-grown director Mr Anthony Chen as well as Ms Cheah Wenqi from Our Grandfather Story (OGS). Highlights of the event included the guest speakers’ sharings, school sharings as well as the mixed collaborative group task segment. Each participating CCA presented insights on their respective inner workings, including their operations pre and post Covid, as well as their achievements. The symposium also featured a group task segment, where teams comprising participants from the mixed JCs, collaborated virtually to present a photo series.
By readily adapting to planning a virtual event, Studio Ardent led by example to prove that regardless of circumstances, it is still possible to continue chasing our passions and aspirations. On top of that, by being the first JC to organise such a symposium, we are essentially paving the way as well as providing a springboard for future symposiums.
“Plans are nothing; planning is everything” - Dwight. Eisenhower
Indeed, behind the success and sheer scale of the event, lies a great deal of hard work toiled and a multitude of plans foiled. The itinerary of the event alone had gone through multiple revisions, to accommodate the schedule of our guest speakers as well as to better line with the participants’ feedback by and large. The success of the event can be largely attributed to the adaptability and resilience of the dedicated organising team, who remained resolute in making this event a reality.
The team would also like to extend their sincere gratitude to Dr Melvyn Lim (Deputy Principal/HCI), for his valuable advice and guidance, as well as Mr Ren Xiaohui (HCSS Teacher-in-Charge), who consistently stood by our side in the midst of challenges. Additionally, not forgetting our esteemed guest speakers, Mr Anthony Chen and Ms Cheah Wenqi, for their insightful and inspirational sharings. Last but definitely not least, our success would not have been possible if not for the active participation of our audiences.
Signing off,
