As a Service CCA, Studio Ardent is honoured to have the chance to serve the school by providing media and PA/AVA support for various school events over the years. Last year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, duty opportunities were limited as many school events were cancelled. Unfazed by the unprecedented situation, we continued to seek new ways of contributing meaningfully to society using the skills we learnt in CCA. Keeping in mind the value of 饮水思源, we started the 'Ardent Gives Back' initiative and organised a CIP project in the form of an instructional workshop on photography.
Studio Ardent carried out a photography course for youths aged 10 to 16, titled 'Shoot Away', in collaboration with the Foundation of Rotary Clubs Singapore (FRCS) Rotary Family Service Centre. We carried out the first part of the workshop virtually through Zoom during the March holidays over two days (15 and 16 March 2021), with each day's session being 1.5 hours long. We are also planning to execute the second part of our course physically during the June holidays.
Our instructional workshop aims to equip participants with basic photography and photo editing knowledge. This course will aid participants in putting the knowledge learnt to use and help them acquire and develop the skills needed to become proficient in photography. We also hope to expose more youths to media arts, such as photography and help them discover a potential interest, hobby or career in media arts and impart essential values such as an appreciation for beauty and excellence in everyday scenarios, patience, creativity and curiosity.
The successful execution of the CIP project did not come easy as the organising team faced many challenges. During the initial stages of planning, The team had to contact over ten different organisations before receiving a favourable reply from FRCS. The proposal was also revised multiple times up to the last minute due to the rapidly changing situation. Just a few weeks before the March holidays, the school and MOE imposed stricter restrictions on external CIP and service-learning activities. As a result, the team had to redo our proposal to accommodate the workshop being held online rather than physically.
During the actual event itself, the team did not face any major hiccups or technical difficulties, thankfully. Both the participants and volunteers enjoyed the experience and had a lot of takeaways. For the organising team, we have learnt to tailor our learning outcomes and resources to suit the needs and interests of our target audience. We also learnt from the staff at FRCS FSC how to better engage with and hold the attention of young children. All in all, the CIP project was a fulfilling and rewarding experience for everyone involved in it.
The team would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the school management and the VIA unit for their unwavering support. We also want to thank our teacher-in-charge, Mr Ren, who gave us valuable advice along the journey as well as Ms Stephanie and Mr Khalifah from FRCS FCS for agreeing to work with us. Last but not least, the event would not have been possible without the active participation of the participants and the hard work of the organising team and volunteers.
We are confident that future batches will continue to carry on the spirit of service beyond self and organise more purposeful and meaningful projects like this.
Signing off,
CIP Organising Team
