Tagalog is a Central Philippine Language, which belongs to the Malayo-Polynesian language subgroup, belonging to the wider Austronesian language family. Other Austronesian languages include Ilocano, Cebuano, Bisayan, Malay, Javanese, Amis, Hawaiian, Maori, Tongan, Fijian, Samoan, Malagasy, Chamorro, and much more. Tagalog is over 4,000 years old, which continues to evolve. The word Tagalog is from the endonym taga, which means from; ilog, which means river--meaning "From the River". Tagalog dominates much of the vocabulary of the Filipino language, which also has loanwords from English, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, Nahuatl, Arabic, and Persian.
