There are so many cool things to learn in Middle School! Next year, in 7th grade, you will have a few choices about the courses you want to take. One choice is about your math course: Math 7 or Accelerated Math 7/8. The accelerated course addresses all the standards from Math 7 and about half of the standards from Math 8. Any student who has successfully completed Math 6 has the option to enroll in the Accelerated Math 7/8 course. An accelerated course isn’t for everyone, though. Unprepared students who are placed in an accelerated mathematics class report a decline in motivation, and they end up taking fewer upper-level mathematics courses in high school. So here are some things you and your parents should consider…
The Accelerated 7/8 Math course teaches one-and-a-half years of mathematics in one year. This means the pacing of the accelerated course is 50% faster and will involve 50% more homework than your current course.
How do you feel about the pace and workload of Math 6? If you’re ready to work harder and learn mathematics at a faster rate than you do now, then Accelerated Math 7/8 might be for you!
The primary reason to accelerate math in middle school is to start you on the pathway to AP Calculus in high school. Calculus is critical for students who envision a career in mathematics, science, or finance.
What do you want to do in your future? If you think your future might involve science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM), then Accelerated Math 7/8 might be for you!
Not every student knows what they want to do. Maybe you need a deeper understanding of mathematics concepts. Maybe you need to improve your study skills, your focus, or your time management. That’s ok because this isn’t the only pathway to accelerate your mathematics.
You could take a summer Math 8A acceleration course during the summer between 7th and 8th grade (pending availability). Or you could take Geometry and Algebra 2 together during Grade 10. These options will also put you on a pathway toward AP Calculus.
