Raider I tracking utilized a specialized GPS tracking device called the SPOT Gen3 Satellite GPS Messenger. Additional tracking was also provided by the GPS Tracker TK 102-2.
The SPOT Gen 3 is independent of cellular mobile networks and can operate at altitudes up to 6,500 meters. This allows for the ability to track the payload at much higher altitudes than standard GPS system.
The SPOT Gen 3 receives GPS satellite signals then communicates those coordinates to the Globalstar satellite network which forwards to terrestrial satellite antennas and onto the Internet messaging service. Once registered with the messaging service, we were able to receive movement notifications, plus GPS coordinates and altitudes.
Tracking information can be obtained three different ways: via periodic SMS (frequency set by user), via SPOT App (graphical representation using Google Maps), and findmespot.com website. Primary method used was through the use of the SPOT app.
The SPOT Gen 3 has some limitations/disadvantages:
The GPS Tracker TK 102-2 serves as a backup tracking device once the vessel is within cellular range. The GPS Tracker requires a SIM card to be added. Once a call is placed to the tracker’s SIM number, a text message is received providing the GPS coordinates.
