FLIGHT LEGALITIES

The Project Horizon team initially had no idea as to process required to launch a High Altitude Balloon (HAB). Following communication with both HAB enthusiasts and HAB supporters (https://www.stratoflights.com/en/tutorial/weather-balloon-registration/germany/), we were able to fine tune the requirements in the below three simple processes:

1. Obtain special flight insurance – Allianz (Certificate of Insurance for Aviation Third Party Legal Liability Insurance)

2. Obtain Genehmigung (German authorization) from German Authority with State (Landesbetrieb Mobilitat Rheinland-Pfalz). You need to provide proof of insurance, date and time of launch (range is OK), GPS coordinates of launch site (authorization required), weight of payload (must be less than 4kg), number of packages, balloon particulars, purpose, etc.

3. Launch date/time should have less than 50% cloud coverage
