Mr. Swiger will teach integrated science & health through project based learning. He will focus on real world problems and solution with a heavy focus on technology. In his class you will see students researching, collaborating, exploring and innovating. Students will be applying newly learned reading, writing, and math skills.
Ms. McPhail-Hastings will teach integrated language arts and social studies. The reading program is based on a 50/50 mix of fiction and non-fiction with an emphasis on American history. The language arts program will focus on the four elements of communication: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
Mr. Mercen will teach 4th grade math. His approach will be a systematic, problem solving program that allows any student to start at his or her current level and work his or her way up to higher levels at any pace. Students needing help may stay at a level until they have mastered it. Students wanting more challenging work may move on ahead. However, everyone must also do 4th grade math.
Welcome to the 4th Grade! We are looking forward to working with your child and taking him or her as far as we can in a year. School can be fun, but it doesn't have to be. Sometimes it is hard work and sometimes it involves leaving the comfort zone, but the results are worth it. We believe that every child can learn new things. We have a "Growth Mindset Philosophy" in which we believe that every child is still growing. When a child tells us "I don't get it", we respond with "you just don't get it .... yet". Your child will learn, but it happens at a different rate for each child.
We believe that every child belongs to the class and we look for connections to help support them emotionally and academically. We want your child to enjoy coming to school and to look forward to making progress daily. We have a proven academic program and we have elements in place for individual differences. Our aim is to make sure that by the end of the year your child is ready for fifth grade and beyond. Please let us know if we can help your child in any way.
