Homework Policy:

Why is homework assigned?

I believe homework is important, because it is a valuable aid in helping students make the most of their experiences in school. Homework is useful in reinforcing what has been learned in class, prepares students for upcoming lessons, and teaches responsibilities and helps students develop study habits. In addition, homework is for parents to know where their child is at and if they need support. All homework should be done independently, except shared reading.

When homework will be assigned?

There are many changes because of COVID-19 and homework is one of them. Daily reading is a requirement. A reading log will be due monthly. Please read every weekday except holidays. Math homework will be assigned the day of lesson and will be hard copy. Math homework & ELA does not need to be submitted or graded. ELA packets will be given out on Wednesdays. The ELA packets will not be tuned in/collected or graded. ELA packets will start the last week of October. Math homework & Reading logs will begin the week after school starts..

Students and Parents’ homework responsibilities:

I expect students to do their best on their homework. Homework should be done neatly. Parents play a major role in making homework a positive experience for their child. Therefore, I ask that parents make homework a top priority; provide necessary supplies, and a quiet homework environment, set daily homework time, provide praise, and support. In addition, as your child increases his/her reading levels, their reading times will increase. Also, I require that each students read at home for 30 minutes daily. Reading could be listening to someone reading, sharing a book with a parent or sibling, reading independently, or discussing a book with a parent or sibling.

Expectations:

Grading Policy:

The following marking codes are used on report cards:

CD- Constantly Displayed

P- Progressing

N- Not Evident

I will also use the following marks, usually for classroom tasks or assignments:

+    Excellent 90-100%

/+  Very good 80-89%

/     Satisfactory 70-79%

/-   Needs Improvement 50-69%

-     Objective/Skill not mastered 0-49%

For papers checked in class, a circle around the problem number means the answer is incorrect. Nothing is put next to the correct answer, but most of the time I will make individual comments on what your child will need to improve or achieved in their tasks. All class work is graded and recorded.

Classroom Behavior:

I set very high standards for students’ behavior. I encourage students to take responsibility for their actions. Each student will monitor his or her behavior by a color coded/monetary system. For every transition, expectations are set and stated multiple times. Then it is up to the student to meet the expectations. At the end of the day, each student will be paid for their behavior. Your child will bring home a behavior calendar, please initial if orange or red. Green indicates they are ready to learn (25 cents). Blue indicates they had great effort (50 cents). Turquoise means they made excellent choices (75 cents). Purple means they were outstanding ($1.00). Yellow indicates that they need to think about their behaviors (10 cents). Orange means they need to make better choices (5 cents). And Red means that your child will be explaining their behavior in a Behavior Reflection Sheet. Red also means they will be receiving 1 penny. The payment system will not start until October, when we have reviewed our numbers.

Logical Consequences for inappropriate behaviors:

Your child will be given couple of reminders/warnings before the consequences start.

Logical Consequence: Temporary loss of privileges, equipment, items, and activities

Logical Consequence: Finish at recess or own time

Logical Consequence: Make time up at recess or at own time

Logical Consequence: Separation from group or individual

Logical Consequence: Separation from group or individual

Logical Consequence: Practice procedures during own time

If there is a safety concern, the student will be sent to the office.

*Note: “Time-out” time= minutes for child’s age (example: 7 year old = 7 minutes)

If your child has filled out a Behavior Reflection sheet, they are to write their inappropriate behavior and how they were able to cope or manage the behavior or issue. In addition, the Behavioral Reflection sheet goes home and needs parent’s signature, then sent back the very next day.  Please know that Behavior sheets are a form of communication for you and your child.

If you'd like to contact me about your child's behavior you may call the office or email me at charmaine.cruz@dodea.edu
